Your favorite TV romances and why?

I really felt for Jaye's deep, desperate need for Eric on Wonderfalls, especially when she breaks down in front of Sharon in the final episode. "I let him go. I had to let him go. I didn't want to let him go. I wanted to keep this one. Why can't I have nice things?"

I'm glad they never focused on it too much but I enjoyed the Jack McCoy/Claire Kincaid romance on Law & Order, especially when Claire would be confronted with one of the other former ADAs that Jack slept with.

David and Maddie (Moonlighting) -- the sexual tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Then they did it and the series fell apart.

NewsRadio was so much more fun when Dave & Lisa were together. Besides Phil Hartman dying, Dave & Lisa not getting back together at the end was the worst thing that ever happened to that show. The Lisa/Johnny Johnson romance was stupid (although it was funny when Johnny became king of the winos).

Off the top of my head, of all the TV romances I enjoyed the Niles/Daphne (Frasier) and Odo/Kira (Deep Space Nine) relationships the most. And incidentally, I liked them both for similar reasons: In the beginning both were portrayed as unrequited love, which eventually led to a relationship. I guess I can identify a lot with the 'unrequited love' part. :(

But I also enjoyed a great deal of the Riker/Troi (The Next Generation), Homer/Marge (The Simpsons) and David/Keith (Six Feet Under) pairings.
That's me too. Niles/Daphne had a very nice relationship and courtship.

And I too enjoyed Riker/Troi (TNG)... I was a big shipper of those two back in the day.

And one to add: Mulder/Scully (The X-Files). I enjoyed seeing the relationship grow and change over the years, in spite of the shows flaws.

To go from two people working together, to friends, to friends with benefits , to lovers, to *gasp* (at least figuratively) an old married couple... not that I mean the last one in a bad way...

Shows that these two have come a long way from where they started.

My hat's off to both David and Gillian for doing such a good job in portraying them over the years.

Jim and Pam from The Office , Marshall and Lilly from How I Met Your Mother and another vote for Niles and Daphne.

Mac and Sally McMillan from McMillan and Wife
Jonathan and Jennifer Hart from Hart to Hart
Dharma and Greg (except for the last season)

John & Aeryn: These two had wonderful chemistry and I really liked how their relationship was allowed to play out believably and to full fruition, something that's almost unprecedented in television. Definitely one for the books!

Mulder & Scully: I think M&S probably had the finest natural chemistry in the history of TV. And while the progression of their relationship was a tad trying at times, they still ended up roughly where they should be at the end.

I'm punching myself in the face because I forgot to put them down.

There's no beating John & Aeryn, but Paul & Jamie, Bill & Laura, Chandler & Monica, and John & Delenn are definitely pretty damn good, too.

Damnation, how could I forget about them? Fantastic couple right there. Balancing the relationship with MS and the Presidency? That's not a walk through the park and yet they managed through it with an intact marriage.

Buffy and Angel - I like the beauty and the beast aspect to their relationship. I like the fact that he's hundreds of years old and a creature of the night and she isn't. I like that it's doomed.

Avon and Servalan - not a romance so much, but there were sparks and it would be interesting to see how mutually assured destruction would work on a one-to-one basis!

Riker and Troi - I enjoyed speculating about the nature of their relationship when TPTB were giving us nothing.

Zoe and Wash - I like the way Whedon mixed up the traditonal/stereotypical power dynamic there. The partner wearing the leather trousers and toting the guns was the wife. I wanted to see more of where that relationship was going in terms of Zoe's relationship with Reynolds.

Starkbuck and Anders - they looked good together and I enjoyed the frakked upness. It was a sad relationship too, and damaged, but it started well. Guess I'm not going to be friends with the Starkbuck/Apollo fans now. :(

Six and Baltar - I just love watching these two. Their different physiques for a start is always entertaining. I love 'em.

Nine and Rose - It kind of was a romance and kind of wasn't. I liked it because I think Billie Piper and Chris Eccleston look good together in the way their ages and styles contrast. I think I like it for a lot of the same reasons I like Buffy and Angel.

Jack and Ianto - A couple of handsome blokes who looked good together. And it was interesting to watch. They were sweet together, especially when Ianto started talking about his feelings.

That's it for now. Will probably think of more later.

John and Aeryn- Perhaps the greatest couple in all of sci-fi. Their relationship actually felt real and evolved in a believable way, from a believable place.

Wesley and Fred- I really identify with the whole unrequited love thing. Of course, once the love ceases to be unrequited, and it looks like they could finally be happy, Whedon has to go and rip my fucking heart out. :(

Dick and Mary: Both characters had their eccentricities and you could see why they would be drawn to eachother. Lithgow and Curtain were a fantastic comedic duo, as well. Two words: Leather pants.

Sheridan and Delenn: Like John and Aeryn, these were to strong willed equals brought together in a very believable way. Their final goodbye ranks as one of the greatest tearjerking moments in television.

As someone who generally finds 'shipping completely incomprehensible (fussing over whether or not fictional people get together is just bizarre to me), most TV romances leave me completely cold. These are the exceptions:

Crichton and Aeryn, Farscape - the gold standard for TV 'ships. Everything about this pairing just worked.

Sheridan and Delenn, B5 - everything about this pairing worked, too.

Furillo and Davenport, Hill Street Blues - probably the first TV 'ship I saw that didn't make me want to retch.

David and Keith, Six Feet Under - took them long enough, but thankfully they got their act together eventually.

Chandler and Monica, Friends - I wouldn't have picked it at the start of the series but it worked really well.

These are the ones (off the top of my head; there may be others I've forgotten) that struck me as...well, more like actual relationships than the sort of insipid, saccharine, everything-is-perfect-all-the-time, relationships-require-no-effort-whatsoever, all-problems-are-trivial-and-can-be-solved-in-(half) an-hour drivel many TV "romances" seem to be.

I definitely found Niles a tremendously identifiable character, so the consummation of that relationship was a great cathartic moment. Unlike some I also think the show also handled their married problems very well - one of my favourite moments in the series is when Frasier is analysing how the way Niles worshipped Daphne is disassociated from reality: "How did you love her? From afar. You were never in love with her, you were in love at her."

...

Yeah, I miss that series.
