Why did everybody speak English?

Was there ever a reason given on screen why everyone spoke English? Vulcans, Klingons, Romulas, even some Blue race were all speaking like they were straight out of California even amoungst themselves when the Earthers were not around.

I know because we were manily a English speaking audience, but was there ever a reason given on screen?

Universal Translator.

Joe, briefed
Yup. The only other time we got an explanation was "Bread & Ciruses", where Kirk & co. are startled to hear an alien person speaking in 20th century vernacular English.

Um, it just happened to evolve that way. Really.

Most other times, though, seem to be UT dealies.

I had one of those RCA English-only TV sets. I don't know what everyone else was watching on. All the shows I watched were in English.

The only time I think I really noticed back then was in The Apple, when Kirk started talking to that guy he slugged with "Do you understand me?"

Even as a kid, I thought. "Hm! Why should this guy speak English?"

Oh yeah - also in "Errand of Mercy" when Kor is holding up a list of new laws written in English.

One certainly wonders why they were startled, since before beaming down they observed a televised broadcast originating from the planet which was in English.

Maybe they didn't have their UTs turned on at the time for whatever reason, or they're able to tell the difference between UT-translation and actual English.

Well, since there were so few Klingonese speakers in the general television audience in the mid 60's, and the inescapable fact that subtitles cost money, they had to make a few concessions here and there.

Universal translator in many cases. But, yes, really, it was done just so the audience would know what the hell everyone was saying. We have to assume that they were speaking their native tongues and that, through the magic of Hollywood, it didn't sound like a bad Robin Williams skit.

Also because having a secne every week of them trying to figure out what the hell the aliens were saying would just suck wind. Irwin Allen tried it a few times on his shows and every time, the aliens had useless BS explanations. Besides, it ain't English, it's Federation Standard. lol I say. Lol.

The Federation was so large that they probably decided to learn English in order to make communication easier. There was also the Universeal Translator.
