Faith-inspired music question (please be respectful)

I phrased the thread title that way because I'm not necessarily looking for bands that are strictly Christian bands, but bands that are definitely informed by their faith.

I listen to many, many kinds of music and I am not insistent on exclusively listening to religious music by any means. But, I am looking to add some faith-inspired music to my collection. I've already got "classical" covered, and other than actually IN church, my tastes in "contemporary Christian" are rather limited.

What I'm looking for is mainly two genres...gospel, and hard rock/metal.

Yes, the latter actually exists. Bands I like in that genre so far include Thrice, Underoath, Killswitch Engage--well, before they really started with darker lyrics in their last album, and Skillet. Orphaned Land and Amaseffer are also really cool for Old Testament/Torah inspired stuff. Based on that, does anyone have recommendations?

(Intelligent lyrics like Thrice are a plus.)

An atheist here. I don't listen to true christian rock (per se) but own some borderline albums and have listened to other stuff. As long as it's not overt or preachy, I listen to rock/metal based on the quality of the music. It really depends on the genre you are after.

Obviously (edit) Stryper is in the christian hard rock vein, but their stuff is OK as rock music.

Impelliterri (speed metal) is actually considered a christian group. If you read the lyrics it's a little more obvious, and the main band members always thank Jesus Christ in the liner notes. The 2 albums with Graham Bonnett are a little more mainstream and therefore, less christian. The ones with Rob Rock are more in the religious vein.

I've got 2 CD's from a group called Circus Maximus. I noticed the "religious" monicker after I had ripped the CD's in WMP and it had that in the genre section.

You ever listen to Avenged Sevenfold?

They might be right up your alley. They're very inspired by their faith but don't beat you over the head with it. Decent hard-rock/metal band

"Afterlife" in particular reflects that.

Ahh, interesting--I'd heard a few songs of theirs on the radio, but I don't think I'd ever paid that much attention to their lyrics. Sounds interesting, and there are a few other suggestions here I think I'll look into as well.

I think Anberlin qualifies as about the kind of band you're looking for. Avenged Sevenfold definitely works as well (afterall, they're named after Cane and Abel). If I think of more, I'll post, but I can't right now.

Well, except for Creed, but Scott Stapp is an asshole. Don't expect to get actual Christian behavior for him in between his choked Hetfield-esque vocals.
