Warner Bros informed TrekWeb that two rare TV Pilots written and produced by the late Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry in the 1970s will be available for the first time on DVD next Tuesday.
Both Genesis II and Planet Earth will be out on DVD on Tuesday, as part of the new Warner Archive DVD series.

the Planet Earth
pilot
co-starred Diana Muldaur(who later was cast as Doctor Pulaski in Star Trek The Next Generation) in the role of Marg, leader of a Amazon race called "Women of Ruth".

I'd rather see Questor...I've never seen that one. But, the Genesis II and Planet Earth discs ARE cool...

Great news, this. Been wanting these for quite awhile.

Hopefully these will sell well enough for Warner to release The Questor Tapes and Spectre at some point as well.

backstory on both pilots & tie in to Star Trek

Genesis II (1973)
Planet Earth (1974) were both shot on 35mm film. I wonder if they will be transferred to the DVD from the original internegative. Of course they both would have a mono soundtrack from a 1970s TV pilot.

FYI the trivia from Planet Earth on imdb.com shows:
John Quade as the Kreeg Commander wore an early version of the cranial ridge makeup that would later be used for the Klingons in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979).

The plot was based on a story premise for 'Genesis II' called "The Poodle Shop", which was in turn based on an unused story idea ("The Pet Shop") in Gene Roddenberry's original pitch for "Star Trek" (1966).

I have just asked for a thread move request over to General Trek Discussion since these pilots are related to Trek.

Re: backstory on both pilots & tie in to Star Trek

I have just asked for a thread move request over to General Trek Discussion since these pilots are related to Trek.

Why? Yes, they're from the same producer, but they're independent works of SFTV, not part of the Trek universe in any way. A Knight Rider thread wouldn't go in the Galactica forum, and a thread on the Showtime Outer Limits wouldn't go in the Stargate forum, even though the same producers were behind them.

Also, if we move this here, does that mean Andromeda belongs in General Trek too? After all, that show was directly based on Genesis II/Planet Earth, right down to having a hero named Dylan Hunt. If Andromeda threads belong in SF&F, then so does this thread.

I have to agree. This does not belong in General Trek.

Please move it back to Sci fi and Fantasy.

Re: backstory on both pilots & tie in to Star Trek

This does not belong in General Trek.

Please move it back to Sci fi and Fantasy.

And yet, if the thread hadn't ever been moved to General Trek, I'd probably never have seen it, since the SF & F section is a place I rarely think of entering - there's enough ST sections to keep me busy.

So moving the thread isn't the urgent thing but someone ensuring there was a heads-up in General Trek, re a thread with potential ST interest - and a link across to it - would be great. And a moved thread can provide that link.

So thanks to the OP, and to the Mod who moved it!

What I would really love is all of Roddenberry's work released on DVD. The Questor Tapes was released on VHS (I'm not sure about LaserDisc).

I don't come to General Trek. So I wouldn't have known about this release if not for the topic appearing in Sci-Fi and Fantasy that referred me here.

Just because it's Roddenberry doesn't mean it's Trek. These projects had nothing to do with Star Trek.

This thread DVDs of 1973-74 Roddenberry pilots Genesis II, Planet Earth has had 279 Views as of this morning from the General Trek forum

There is a similar thread Roddenberry’s Genesis II and Planet Earth Coming to DVD actually in the Star Trek - Original Series forum and that has 365 Views as of this morning.

This is Trek-related and that is why I requested placement in the General Trek forum.
The 4th post shows why it is related and how Trek fans would find it relevant.
If it weren't interesting then it wouldn't have garnered 500 viewings.
Unless you feel like there is a need for consolidation and thread merge the mods have let it be as well as
Science Fiction & Fantasy mod NerooOOoon closed this thread Roddenberry's GENESIS II/PLANET EARTH DVD just yesterday.

That's one of the things I like about TREKBBS-the people here will fight about anything, even when there shouldn't be a point of contention. The wonders of a scifi fan's mind-
Nothing to fight about? We'll make something up!

So going back on topic-any further word on Questor Tapes? Does Warner own it too?

he Questor Tapes: The Unfulfilled Promise update!

any further word on Questor Tapes? Does Warner own it too?

just did a bit of searching:

the pilot titled Gene Roddenberry's The Questor Tapes: The Unfulfilled Promise.

The best of the post-TREK pilots, QUESTOR's themes were woven into the next 2 Roddenberry produced projects; principally the characters of V'ger from STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE and, I know you all ready know it: Data, from NEXT GENERATION.

the pilot, cut into its requisite YouTube wee chunks:
THE QUESTOR TAPES Part 1-12

"The Questor Tapes" is not currently available commercially on video. The only authorized video that I know of was a PAL format video from Great Britain, but it is long out of print. Every once in a while you can find someone selling a converted to NTSC copy of that tape on eBay and more recently on DVD-R.

imdb.com shows Universal TV is the production company and probably would still have the rights to any DVD release.

Here is the most recent news on a remake:
Sept 16:
Questor Returns: The remake of Gene Roddenberry's pilot telefilm "The Questor Tapes" has found some financing and is moving forward. They still have to decided if the movie will go network or cable. The movie originally done in 1974 never made it to a weekly series. Look for the pilot telefilm to hit the airwaves in the 2004/2005 season.

There are no details on who "they" are: the producers, the production company, etc.

Now I can't find any more info on Questor Returns

I never said it wasn't interesting, I said it wasn't Trek related. Unless of course you think that TJ Hooker threads should be put in TOS, Knight Rider threads in BSG and so on.

It is quite interesting, but it belongs in SciFi, not General Trek.

Re: backstory on both pilots & tie in to Star Trek

Besides the fact that these pilots were produced by Roddenberry, how are these Trek related? Yes, they are of interest to Star Trek fans, but that isn't the same thing.

If a thread gets moved, at least it's visible in the menus of both SF TV and General Trek, for example. It's no insult to the OP. If the thread i's only ever left in one or the other then it only gets seen by people who think to go to that section.

I don't see a problem with moving a thread anywhere, but if we are frightened to ever post an occasional OT this place becomes very unfriendly, don't you think? If someone posted that "TJ Hooker" boxed DVD sets were imminent, I see nothing wrong with it being mentioned in TOS, whether via a moved thread or a heads-up post that directs people to a relevant thread in some other section.
