Rio de Janeiro wins 2016 Olympics

Rio is a hell of a city so congrats to them... still I wanted the Olympics in the good old US of A. It would have been exciting. Alas.

I'm not too shocked by this. SA was due to host the Games, and seeing as North America has them next year, awarding them to another North American city just six years later would have been a bit too soon. Good on the IOC for picking Rio!

I'm just glad it's out of Copenhagen by this time.

Too frakking expensive and too frakking disturbing of normal life where ever that committee is going!

However, there's a point to be made:

Isn't Brazil REALLY dangerous? I wonder how many athletes will be killed? This could be a public relations nightmare!!!

Isn't Rio the murder capitol of the world? Isn't that going to be a PR disaster when dozens of Olympic tourists are killed taking in the sights?

I'm relieved. I just happened to be downtown during the announcement. People were definitely shocked. I think this was more of a message to the US above all.

It's about time a South American country host the Olympics.

I'm not any sort of expert on this sort of thing, but the "South America's never had the Olympic Games" card was definitely the thing that made it for Brasil -and, when you think about it, it's s about time!

No surprise if you ask me!

Here in Chicago, many of us were delivering that line somewhat tongue-in-cheek style as our way of saying we weren't interested, that's all.

Not an issue..

The 2007 Pan-American games were quite secure.

In fact, the security forces did so well during those games, the security experience was one of the factors that helped
Rio's bid.

I'm actually really glad that Rio won. The US just had the Summer Olympics in 96, and the Winter Olympics in 2002. It's good that the Olympics are going to South America for the first time, and I think after their experience hosting the Pan-American Games and preparing for the 2014 World Cup, Brazil will do a fine job of hosting the Olympics.

But I'm hoping Chicago makes another run for the 2020 games.

i love it we in the usa had the olympics in 1984 and 1996! about time some ease has it! but have it where it summer time and winter please. for the summer olympics lol love dr;)
