Environmentally friendly dvd/cd packaging.

Okay, so I bought the new Alice In Chains today, and it's in one of those stupid cardboard sleeves. I hate those things. By the time you've slid the disc in and out of it 20 or 30 times, you'll have scratched it all to hell. Not to mention that you have to touch the edge of the disc every time you pull it out. I'm going to rip it to the computer and leave it in the case. Anyway, those futurama movies are like that, too. It's really annoying. I applaud the fact that they're using recycled materials, but come on, can't you come up with a way to package a disc that doesn't damage it with each use?

Try squeezing the sides of the case to widen the opening. This allows the disc to more easily slide in and out. This is not going to work on every package or completely erase the risk of damage, but it's better than nothing.

Tried it, it's in there tight. I don't really care all that much, because I don't plan on listening to the original disc very often, but it's the principle of the thing. It's somewhat like a miniature LP, but records have protective sleeves. You don't just slide them in and out of the bare cardboard.

On a side note, the album is awesome. I was skeptical about an AIC album without Layne Staley, but Jerry and Layne always did kind of a harmonizing thing, and that's fully intact here, and easily recognizable as Alice In Chains.

Honestly talk about "cheap" putting it in the same kind of cardboard sleeve you used to get AOL disks in 5 years ago LOL "We're ahem... environmentally sound now! But we're really just getting very cheap!"

Its frustrating when you think about how complex some CD cases and record albums used to be back in the day. Almost like creativity has taken a backseat to "eco friendliness", that's why I buy a CD instead of just downloading. If its got a cool case, I'll buy it. Since its nice to have a piece of physical original media, not just a burned copy.

I guess this is all part of the "Man's" plan to do away with CDs and move to digital distro.

Could be. I've already happily reached that point. :techman:

I do remember when CD packaging used to be absolutely huge chunks of cardboard with the actual CD box tucked away inside it. Now even I agree that was totally useless. But they shouldn't do any of this fancy shit. For those who still buy CDs, just leave the boxes on the shelf as normal...

I also hate fancy DVD packaging. I threw away all of the boxes for my ST:TNG, DS9, Enterprise and Voyager sets because the packaging was such a pain in the ass. (Especially TNG, which involved unfolding the stupid box about six times before you could get to the DVD you wanted. And the ENT sets make you uncork a big plastic box, slide the DVD set out, then get another plastic sleeve off of *that*, before you can get to the discs. :brickwall: ) Those Case Logic sleeves really come in handy.

And from what I hear, they're still doing this stupid shit. The nuBSG Blu-Ray set, for example.

I absolutely friggin' hate this, since I buy things watch them once and sell them on the internet. So it's hard to keep it mint condition when the act of taking it out of the goddamn sleeve scratches it up!

I have to add that I hate it when they put the adhesive on some DVDs to keep them in place for shipment (my recent Smallville Season 8 purchase had a blue glue on the back of Disk 3). I also hate it when the discs are too tightly fastened. I nearly broke one of the Terminator Season 2 discs today when I was trying to get it out of the case.

Sorry, I'm being picky today.

The Stargate whole series set is a lot of fun too. I thought I'd get it because it looked real cool, but another PITA to get into.

I hate the new all cardboard CD sleeves too.
The dijipacks aren't so bad, still has a plastic tray in it, but is otherwise cardboard. Usually cheaper to buy though.

I rip everything I get now, but still listen to the CD in the car, so there's some in & out there.

If I get the new Jeep I'm hoping to get, the radio/CD player has a hard drive in it. Songs can be saved to the HD.

And if there's some kind of USB connection, I wouldn't have to go the IPod route.

But right now, nothing like that in my '04.

It is the way to go though.

I have to admit, with the ease of ripping a CD to a hard drive in MP3 or WMA or AAC format, the CD is only really a temporary medium at best now. Heck, the last CD I bought new was last year's Alice Cooper : Along Came A Spider - which came in a cardboard digipac like thing, with the booklet and such, and I think that worked, at least it had a spot for the disk, but within 5 minutes I had the cd ripped to my hard drive and a copy made for my dad to take with him in the car, and the cd hasn't been out of its case in almost a year.

My only problem is I'm running out of hard drive space LOL - still using old compys biggest hard drive I've got is 80 gigs and my working computer is only a 40 gig. But still, rip it, copy it, download it to an MP3 player or flash drive or memory chip and you don't need to even look at the original disc again. Unless you want to read the lyrics - which IS cool, since its more accurate sometimes than a lyrics website.

Honestly I like the complex cases LOL makes it feel like I got something for my money. Why spend $50 bucks on a season set if it comes in a cheesy ass plastic and cardboard sleeve. Its just 4-5 discs rattlin' around. But if it comes in a useless case or something, at least when it sits on my shelf, it feels like I actually have something of value. Or if I give it as a gift, its far more impressive than a stack of disks in a sleeve and a cardboard box.

At least that's how I feel. What really corks me is that the MPAA and RIAA are all whiny to Obamarama about keeping their "IP intact" - y'know what... we'll pay for their crap if they charge a fair price. And what's stopping us from NOT BUYING a product until we see it in the bargain bin months later and just watch a rental version? What if everyone just did a Netflix or Blockbuster thing and watched 100s of movies a year for less than $10 a month - more movies if you count streaming sites like Hulu and Netflix. So really... what's the point of worrying about a few guys that "steal" movies that people put online. Chances are those aren't the people that would have bought it anyway or would have just bummed a view from their friends. What next, blinders on everyone so that we can't watch someone else's disk. I used to work at Target and it was common for some of us to share and swap dvds and cds. Gee so that $15.99 dvd or cd that we sold was seen by like a dozen people! OMFG THE MONEY THAT WAS LOST! Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan and Tom Cruise are gonna starve!

PUH-LEEZE.
