Interesting SGU ad, at least....

What kinda patch are they wearing?

It's for Icarus Base, where they are stationed. It's an off-world base dedicated entirely to researching the ninth chevron, due to...

...the unique radioactive core of the planet the base is on, which is the only location known in the Milky Way that can support the insane, unbelievable power requirements to catapult them billions and billions of light years away to the Destiny.

:)

If the power requirements are so high to reach Destiny, then how did the Ancients ever hope to gate back to the ship at some point if even ZPM's (their best known highest power source) can't get you there?

I'm guessing they planned to be *on* the ship as it was exploring. Then they got busy with plagues, wraiths and whatnot, and by the time we figure out we can go there, it's already out further than the Ancients ever thought it would go.

Except that the ship was sent way before the Ancients had problems with plagues and wraith, IIRC, the ship is sent during their stint in the Milky Way Galaxy, wayyyyy before Pegasus galaxy. In fact, it looks like it was sent before they even got the Milky Way Stargates finished or built, as it uses an even earlier design of the Stargate than the Mikly Way gates. Therefore, it had to be not to long after they arrived to the Milky Way from their home galaxy. Literally, millions of years ago.

So, it's even more likely that things happened that impeded their ability to conduct their follow-up mission. Yeah, granted, the Ancients first arrived at earth some fifty million years ago, and the Ori only found them five to ten million years ago, leaving what is, in historical terms, a long-ass time for them to check up on the Destiny. But in terms of periods that long, it's entirely possible that the Ancient civilization had multiple rises and falls and we just know about the most recent one, which was caused by the Ori Plague. It's kind of unlikely that the Ancients enjoyed 40 million years of complete stability. (Incidentally, I once thought about it, and it literally boggled my mind to imagine being in a society with in excess of fifty million years of recorded history. God, their AP exams must be murder. I mean, I have enough trouble keeping 43 presidents straight, never mind if there were ten million of them).

Or maybe the Destiny had a crew, and they died or abandoned the ship without turning it or the pilot ship off. Fifty million years is, after all, a long time, and the Ancients didn't seem to believe in putting away their toys after they were done playing.

Or, they actually used the Destiny, explored stuff, and when they had their share, they just let it got on its merry way. The point is, the ship doesn't have the stupid-crazy power requirements to reach it because of an inherent flaw in Ancient planning, but because it's simply so frakking far out.

It's like, if Atlantis somehow ended up out as far as the Destiny, they would need a radioactive planet to power the gate to get to Atlantis as well. The only difference being, they'd use an eight-chevron address to do so, whereas the nine-chevron is hard-coded to always dial the Destinty, wherever it may be.

That makes a lot of sense. I gotta say, the Ancients sure knew how to build things, technology that can last and still work after millions of years aint bad engineering!
