I Have The Swine Flu, Now What?...

K'riq Sa

Commodore
I think I just came down with the dreaded Swine Flu, or maybe one of it's cousins. I noticed it yesterday about mid afternoon, there was a slight tightening in my throat, that later became more pronounced, and by nightfall, I started getting noticeably warmer. This morning when I woke up, my throat was starting to feel really sore, and my nose was starting to congest. My first mistake was to clear my throat and swallow the phlegm, I realized at the point I was introducing the virulent directly into the rest of my body. I immediately began a regiment of gargling with an antiseptic mouth wash, and anytime I cleared my throat or nose, I spit the phlegm out, rather than swallowing it. Had I been at home in Memphis, my grandmother would have started me doing it the minute I felt the sore throat coming on. I immediately felt better, and the soreness in my throat began going away, I just hope I started in time, and I will keep it up over the course of the day by carrying a small water bottle filled with the mouthwash, and I will gargle every 5 min or so, and will continue to do so, even after it has completely gone away.

My car has been in the shop since last Monday, and I will pick it up Mon-Tue, so I have been using public transportation since then. I have noticed a few people sick and coughing on the bus, but did not pay attention, only grumbled to myself that most of the sick people were not covering their mouths when they were coughing. I did not want to seem to be inconsiderate by moving away from them, or covering my nose and mouth, and seeming silly but looking back I certainly should have, screw what people would have thought (damn). When growing up down south I hardly ever had a cold or the flu because we were made at the first sign of a cough or sore throat were immediately made to start gargling with Listerine, and Ta Dah, no cold. So a word to the wise, start your day gargling with an antiseptic mouth wash, 3 or 4 times a day, even if you do not have any symptoms, when someone around you coughs without covering their mouth, cover yours, and at the first sign of flu symptoms, start the regime immediately, so the virus can't get a foothold on your system. Wash your hands with soap and water or an antiseptic towelette after leaving any public place, anywhere where you have had contact with outside people and things.

So lets recap:

1. Gargle at night with a strong antiseptic mouthwash before bed, so the virus can not set up while you are sleeping.

2. Do not swallow phlegm when you clear your nose or throat, spit it out into a trashcan, a napkin, or any safe place you can spit.

3. If you feel the signs of the flu coming on, carry tkhe mouthwash with you and gargle every 5 mins or so.

4. When you see someone who is sick or coughing like they are sick move away from them, and either have them cover their mouth or cover your mouth, or both.

5. Don't take chances, avoid shaking hands and just use the fist bump, use the "The flu is going around." excuse if someone takes exception to you not shaking hands.

Precautions are your best defense, and I for one do not trust the government and their cures (ie the Tuskegee Airmen incident)

be well,

Hopefully it won't turn out to be as bad as my swine flu was. My temperature got up to 104F and lasted for four days....that was no good. Leaving my bed was not even an option.

But on the fifth day it was all over, and I was left feeling drained and exhausted. Rest up!!

I had flu last week, which I'm assuming was a regular flu and not the dreaded swine flu because nobody caught it from me. It lasted nine days, five of which were really bad. Each day the symptoms changed from headaches to stomach cramps to stomach bloating to sore throat to respiratory issues to extreme coughing. And that was nothing compared to the surreal dreams the fever was causing; I would wake up in the middle of the night unsure of what I was, whether I was one person or multiple people, and once I thought I was a giant amoeba. The scariest moment was waking up at 4am in a feverish state while struggling to breath because my lungs only seemed to be working at 60% of normal. It is one thing to have trouble breathing, it is quite another when you're struggling to breath while not knowing what breathing is or how anything in your body works.

I've heard that swine flu is normally quite mild in comparison. :)

sounds like the wild hot monkey sex I've been having recently, maybe it's not the flu, or maybe that was what it was and it was all imaginary in my mind....

A co-worker of mine caught the swine flu (at least he was diagnosed with it by doctors) when he went to Europe a month ago or so. He said it was more or less like a mild cold.

It's the 1st thing that pops into my head every time I get sick. I'm currently sick, but I reckon it's just a bad cold mixed with something viral, very upset stomach for some reason :(. But I agree with Spot's Meow if I had swine flu I doubt I'd be able to move.

^^ I had something like that about a week ago. Luckily, it passed quickly, so hopefully it will for you, too.

The swine is not fun. I was shivering/boiling for two straight days - hot/cold/hot/cold - I had four blankets and was still shaking with chills. After that it mutated into a fortnight of a horrible chesty cough complemented by aches that made me feel like an 80 year old after an Olympic marathon.

It was utterly vile, and I have learned my lesson about being a wimp with needles - I will have any vaccination/flu shot to avoid a flu that bad again.

Yes, one thing you can recognize the swine flu by is the awful cough you get that lasts for weeks afterward. It sounds like you have a bad case of bronchitis or smoker's cough but very little phlegm is produced.

Oh darn ~ I thought it was a hangover (albeit a week long one) with the hot/cold, shivery, achey thing. The loss of appetite, the really sweet taste in my mouth, the 'slightly removed from reality/dizzy' feeling and the hacking cough. But as I could not face smoking and drinking (very unusual) I think I maybe a swine too :(

Thankyou :). Hopefully I'm coming to the end of it, had it for a week now and seemed to have passed it on to everyone else in the household :borg:

I caught it in the first wave back in May. I got Tamiflu and was still pretty much on my ass for a week, then it took me about another week to completely recover. Of course, I have a compromised immune system so it might affect others differently.

I'm of the opinion that the swine flu got inside of you and looked around at what it had to work with, then promptly fled, screaming. ;)

Hah...I get THAT just from a cold. The cough ALWAYS lingers. I sure hope I don't catch H1N1, then! :-/

(Fortunately I usually get only 1 cold a year and then I'm done.)
