CCTV in the UK-how common is it?

I'm always seeing stories about cameras watching people in the UK. Street corners, subways, buses, even a story claiming that they want to put them in the homes of "problem families." I assume places of business are all cameraed up just like in the U.S. I've seen stories that cops can actually yell at you from the cameras all around in the UK too. How common are these cameras and does their presence disturb you at all?

Here is a story about bus CCTV and computer software that will supposedly predict if you are about to commit a crime.

You've asked about this before, especially the 'problem families home CCTV' thing. It was explained to you, you ignored it, and went on about the problem family CCTV some more.
Basically, before I type an answer and get ignored, have you already made up your mind?

Locally (for me) there isn't that much in the way of cctv. Once you get into our local city though, you do tend to see a few more cameras.

I've heard of the CCTV cameras with speakers, but never experienced them.

You don't believe in the problem family cameras. I got that. You obviously don't see an issue with the others and like them. Next.

They don't tend to last long. If the yobs don't get them, the police usually demand they're taken down. We get blamed for them when they're nothing to do with us.

That doesn't surprise me in the slightest. I've heard mention that the cameras on one of the estates near us (mounted so they're just looking at the roads) don't last long, though that's usually more damage related.

Good luck finding a balanced opinion. That's not a knock on anyone here, it's just CCTV isn't as highly used as the general public think.

Yeah. A couple of nights ago I was on the way back from the pub when I had to relieve myself. I'd just found a handy tree and was tapping the old kidney when a voice started haranguing me about some subsection of some bylaw. Looked up and there was a CCTV camera attached to a branch above my head. The bastard kept up his tirade all the way home, following me from camera to camera. :(

So you speak for the entire UK?

Nah, that's Bob.

It is? When did that happen?

They're normally quite well hidden, and I hardly ever notice them.
Hidden? I thought CCTV Cameras in use by the police or council had to be in plain sight, unless being used in an operation where they needed to be hidden of course.
They're certainly in plain sight around here big black 30 foot poles with a big camera on top, not that hard to spot...

I guess I may not be as observant as you, I normally mistake them for actual lamp posts, and the ones on the buses for example are quite small and behind dark glass on the ceilings... It's not very often I look directly up when going about my business. If you weren't looking for them, and no one told you they were there, you probably wouldn't spot very many.

I suppose, yeah, if you didn't know the small black orbs had cameras in them you probably wouldn't think twice about them...

Just out of curiosity, what's the penalty for putting one of these CCTV cameras out of commission?

Here in London, they're absolutely everywhere.

Some examples:
- There are private CCTV cameras all over the estate where I live (which is admittedly a fairly high-end riverside apartment block), both inside the hallways and observing the roads and car park.

- There are cameras (for traffic monitoring purposes) at the nearby busy roundabout junction just down from me.

- There are red light cameras, box junction cameras (do you have box junctions in North America?) and speed cameras on many major roads, roundabouts and intersections.

- There are usually 6-8 cameras watching each platform of a train or tube station, and cameras in every carriage on the trains themselves. There are also normally 2-6 cameras on most busses operated by Transport for London, i.e. London's red busses.

- There are also cameras that record other vehicles in bus lanes on the back and front of busses.

- On some high streets, the council operates CCTV cameras for crime prevention, these are typically on the top of lamp posts and 'rove' back and forth under human control. Sometimes they snap pictures of car registrations if you park on yellow lines or otherwise where you oughtn't.

- There's private CCTV in a good proportion of shops, certainly all department stores, supermarkets and shopping arcades (malls).

So I guess you might ask, am I bothered by this, or are other British people?

I think the answer is 'no'. We're a pretty apathetic bunch, generally, and a lot of British people take the attitude that these sort of things aren't a problem if you're not doing anything wrong. That's not to say this is a universal view - there are some people who are bothered by the omnipresence of CCTV in this country, but there's no organised resistance or objections by any of the major political parties.

Much like our other databases and the ID cards debate, there are a vocal minority of people with serious objections, but I think the vast majority of the population don't care, because they're not criminals, and so they don't think it'll be something that affects them.

There's loads of CCTV, but I just don't think about it - since I'm fairly law abiding then they don't bother me!
