If i remember correctly, is The Visitor the DS9 episode where Sisko visits Jake through time? I haven't watched DS9 in years (except for a very brief "i'll give it another chance, months ago).... if thats the one i am thinking of, i do remember friends of mine being very moved by it while i wasnt.

I wonder if there is a correlation between a person's gender and whether or not they like the episode?
A beautiful episode. Moving, thought-provoking, poetic without being too sappy, with the very elegant device involving the flute and that haunting tune... One of the classics, no doubt.
In passing, this episode reminds me of how little TNG-era Trek made use of music and how unfortunate that is. Look how effective the musical theme is here, and again later in Lessons I think it was, yet that tune is simplicity itself.

^ i will have to watch that episode again. Sometime. Soon. Maybe. I tried rewatching DS9 and couldn't get past the first 5 or so episodes. I remember friends of mine talking about that episode, how they found it so heartbreaking, and me just not feeling the love for that one. i DO remember LOVING the episode where O'Brien is convicted of a crime he didnt commit (?) and having memories of like 20 years in prison embedded into his brain. I do think that one was a heartbreak!

Great story, great acting, its in my top 3 episodes if not the #1.

Because it's the way technobabble should be used in a story. It emphasises the uniqueness of Trek in being used logically as part of the story rather than just the copout ending device.
You mean the technobabble was just a random plot device to set the plot in motion, but the technobabble wasn't used to solve it in the end?

Definitely one of the best TNG episodes.
There's just one thing that decreases my enjoyment of it: what right did those aliens have of subjecting Picard to such a (possibly traumatic) experience, without his consent? I know they were dieing out, but still, it diminishes my sympathy for them.

I certainly don't love it. It isn't bad, but I find it overly touchy-feely and slow paced to the point of boredom.
And once you see Picard is still on the floor of the bridge then the entire game is up.
