Vulcans - Those dumb[*bleep*] deserve to be extinct!

Why weren't the transporters on Enterprise, once the interference is gone, working overtime to beam up as many Vulcans as possible?

They have the time it takes Spock to find the elders at least.

Sure they deserved to go extinct. Based on the way these particular writers chose to depict of them.

The ENT vulcans can go caroling with the dodos too.
TOS Vulcans too? After all they starked the ball rolling with T'pring, T'Pau,Stonn and of course Spock and Sarek. All of whom had a flaw or two.

Bingo. I agree with you and the others that have pointed it out. Perhaps the reason so many feel the Vulcans are the embodiment of perfect is because Spock tried so hard to be as perfect as posible. But I think a lot of that came from him overcompensating for his half human side (and even he had his flaws). The other Vulcans in TOS were no where near perfect, just very interesting.

Agree with most. But STONN? the boy had been pounding T'Pring for years, he was wired in to get Spock's family property, he's probaby was the one to come up with the idea of Spock fighting anyone but HIM. Boy's got mexi eggs.

Think T'Pring of all people could form a idea between multiple orgasms?

Say what you will about the others. Stonn's the man.

My impression was T'Pring had him by the balls. She said "jump" and he said "how high?"

No, but its certainly logical that the Narada's communications equipment is not disrupted by the beam, despite it being a hazard to everyone else's communications...

Okay, explain this to me. My telephone isn't working. Your telephone is. So you are still able to call me, because your telephone is so powerful and can bring my phone to work when you call me?

Now since you will definately jump at "a telephone is not how this works", take a walkie-talkie if you want. ;)

So that two ships can talk to each other, both of them need working communications. It doesn't work when only one of them being able to send signals.

Ham operators and broadcast-communications types will understand how this can be possible, and we've seen other instances in Trek of getting around jamming by using frequencies ordinarily reserved for other functions.

But the Vulcan's couldn't. How sad for them.

But of course, YOU, the great one, will now tell me how 23rd Century Comm systems work...Im glad you know cause I don't.

The film is consistent in showing that the beam was fucking up long range communications, but it seems nothing short range was too messed up. Therefore its perfectly reasonable that the Enterprise and Narada were able to communicate with each other, but not much further.

I swear people just want the answers just dropped in their lap. They want the film to stop to show a 20 min exhibition on why the short range communications work, but not the long range. Damn...Im glad Abrams got rid of all that...

But why did communications continue to not work for the Enterprise once the Narada left the area? They were unable to contact the fleet even while en route to the Laurentian system. Which left me scratching my head...

Maybe the damage that the Narada had done to the Enterprise had knocked out long range communications?

When the Enterprise leaves Vulcan, Kirk and Spock argue over what to next. Kirk suggests assigning engineering crews to help boost the warp yield, and Spock replies that they cannot reassign those crews because they are containing radiation leaks in the lower decks and damage to the subspace communcation systems, because without them they cannot contact Starfleet.

YOU, the great one

Thank you! :)

tell me how 23rd Century Comm systems work

Well, it will work like todays Comm systems. Receive and respond. A sender-receiver relationship. Duplex communication can only work, and that will never change, not even in 300 or 3000 years, if both sides are able to send messages.

I swear people just want the answers just dropped in their lap. They want the film to stop to show a 20 min exhibition on why the short range communications work, but not the long range. Damn...Im glad Abrams got rid of all that...
Not 20 minutes, a simple line would have perfectly sufficed. ;)

But a sufficient line of dialog is what you got, you just may have missed it. That's the difference in the new film, it moved along quickly. These forums are full of ragers who argue plot holes that didn't exist because they missed the key points. The average Trekker may not be able to keep up because that last 20 years of Star Trek has been 20 min explanations of everything happening and about to happen, long winded scenes in conference rooms and so forth. Finally Star Trek is sped up, adding tension and suspense, and making the film (dare I say) exciting !! Something lacking in Star Trek of late. Enterprise being the best example of exposition slowing down the plot and full out dragging the action to a crawl.

Nobody is blaming the movie for being exciting and entertaining. Hell, its now my favorite movie of all time - partially because I love the f*ck out of Star Trek TOS and TNG and partially because Trek has finally been updated for the 21st century. But there are certain things in the movie that certainly doesn't make sense even with in-movie cannon and continuation. The Vulcans-didn't-escape thing jarred me the most so to speak. A couple of lines in a few key scenes would not have slowed the pace of the movie at all but rather would have enriched it further.

It's up to all of us, individually, to let plot holes and sloppy writing ruin our enjoyment of a great film. Every time you eat and enjoy a steak, it doesn't have to be The Perfect Steak.

Here's the issue: Us Trekkers are SO fuckin' picky that we can't even enjoy anything anymore. I swear that half the fandom is only still a fan so they can tear down any new Trek product that comes down the pike (no pun intended). And compare it to old Trek, and question all the phoney science, and shit on any new Trek based concept or story... and yes, I'm guilty too. But only because of late, Trek has been crap, and it's OUR fault. They gave us what we asked for, and it watered down our show, to the point that it was quickly becoming unwatchable. It's our fault... and it's why they rebooted, it's also why they added the Prime Spock alternate universe plot, so the ol' timers would have something to hold on to, and be reminded that "their" Trek was not gone, or erased from time, it's just existing somewhere else. That was a gift, and the fans have shit all over it.
I say fuck it... just gives us new, well written, high concept and action induced Star Trek films. And I (and perhaps me alone) will love it again.

Re: Vulcans - Those dumbfucks deserve to be extinct!

I don't know. I think people tend to romanticize the Vulcans too much. As far back as TOS, they've always been portrayed as, er, difficult.

Sarek doesn't speak to his son for eighteen years just because he joined Starfleet.

T'Pring plots to get Kirk or Spock killed just to get out of an arranged marriage.

T'Pau insists on going through with this barbaric life-or-death combat ritual--even though Kirk clearly had no idea what he was getting into.

Valeris turns traitor to sabotage the Klingon peace initiative.

It didn't start with ENTERPRISE. Aside from Spock, the Vulcans have always been hard to get along with.

That's single individuals, and for every Vulcan that was a bad guy there were like two Vulcans that were good guys.

And a race which follows a philosophy of Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations... that doesn't go together with racism, or insulting someone because of a lack of abilities or his heritage. And at least the leaders of that culture should be actually the kind of Vulcans who follow philosophy and logic the most.
