We need more anthologies!

My top 5 wanted Trek book list:

A Enterprise anthology- Ties up loose ends from the series (Temporal Cold War, follow-ups to episodes screaming for a sequel) and pushes forward with the post-TATV storyline.

Another TOS anthology- Some April and Pike stories, some second-five year mission stories, some post-second-five-year-mission-pre-TWOK stories, some Enterprise-A stories.

A Lost Era anthology- Excelsior, Enterprise-B, Enterprise-C, older TOS crew, Terok Nor, the possibilities are endless!

Another DS9 anthology- fills in the gap between The Soul Key and the Typhon Pact entry.

Another VOY anthology- post finale. Janeway/Tuvok stories, Neelix story, post-String Theory Kes story, Delta Quadrant stories, Captain Chakotay stories, Doctor/Seven stories, then post Full Circle stories.

I'd freak out if I got to read any one of these!

Or one about:

Rura Penthe, Galitep Labor Camp,Tantalus Colony, Suliban Detention Complex #26, Jeros II, New Zealand Penal Settlement, and others.

Nothing like a good prison story.

You ever notice that our boy and girls seem to get locked up a whole lot?

Now that's an anthology I would be interested in! I'm a sucker for a good prison story. Stalag 17, The Shawshank Redemption, The Great Escape, Escape from Alcatraz...hmmm...I'm sensing a theme here...

Don't forget classics like Caged Heat and The Big Doll House . mmm...prison movies

I'd like for them to have an anthology coming out next year set in the universe of the new Trek movie, with only one or two of the monthly TPB slots devoted to entire novels set in that timeline. This would give even more authors the opportunity to play in that new sandbox without devoting a third of the year to novels set only in the newest smallest slice of the Trek universe.

The more nu-Trek lit there is though, the greater the chance that some of it will be contradicted by the next movie.

I'm really liking the idea of a Tales of Destiny anthology too. Even though Destiny itself was very good about showing many locales and characters, there are definitaly many more stories to tell. (TOS characters, New Frontier, Delta Quadrant, and most importantly DS9)

I'd like to see another theme-less TOS anthology. Constellations was the bee's knees (the best of the anniversary anthos, I think), and I also quite enjoy the short, standalone TOS tales we get from Tokypop.

I'd also like a set of Myriad Universes shorts.

My problem with Constellations was that there have already been several hundred adventures shown during the original show's run. How many adventures could Kirk and co have had? Let's show something else. At the very least why not explore the first and last years of the five-year-mission some more. The pre-WNMHGB era and the TAS era have been mostly ignored over the last 40 years.

When I got to the end of the Destiny novels after we'd been sent them to review for the Magazine, my very first email to Marco said that we needed a Destiny anthology... however in the current climate, I think that's one of those things we'll just never see. Unfortunately.

^^ Marco made the conscious decision that the celebration of the original television series would be about the original television series. And honestly, I'm not sure you could fill an entire antho with enough unique stories specifically set in those bookend periods.

Yes, I didn't mean a whole anthology just in those two periods. In regards to a TOS anthology, I'd love to see:

• Captain April
• Captain Pike
• Very early Kirk (Mitchell, Kelso, etc)
• Very late Kirk (Arex/M'ress years)
• Second 5 year mission
• pre-TWOK (the crew has broken up and gone their seperate ways again)
• Enterprise-A

An entire anthology could be produced around those topics, as they span decades.

But I do also think those two previously mentioned shorter era need more exploration in the novels/novellas.

My wish list:

Tales of the Guardian of Forever. Who built it, when, why, and where/when did they go? Why did their planet end up in ruins? How many aliens over the millennia found the Guardian, asked the right question, and were allowed to know/see its true purpose?

The time of Surak, and his emerging discipline of logic. This should also explain how the anti-Surak faction left Vulcan and became the Romulans. This has been hinted at now and then in various novels, but to my knowledge there has not been an entire novel dealing with it.

Speaking of prison stories, what did Zarabeth do to get exiled to Sarpeidon's Ice Age? Sure, we have A.C. Crispin's novels, but they don't go into Zarabeth's life pre-Ice Age exile.

The one thing I feel certain about as far as the future of Trek Lit goes is there will be fewer anthologies than ever so this discussion feels kind of moot to me.

One point KRAD has made is that there is a far greater amount of editing time spent on an anthology than a novel. That makes sense to me even though I know nothing about the publishing business. I'm guessing there's a certain amount of overhead an editor spends dealing with an author whether they are writing a novel or a short story in an anthology. Magnify that time by a dozen and you've got a book that's a much bigger time suck than a novel.

Shortly after Marco was let go, Seven Deadly Sins and COE: Out of the Cocoon where pushed back. The reason given was because anthologies was time intensive. Now Margaret is gone. I am just not counting on seeing any anthologies anytime soon.

I think some things should remind mysterious, and the Guardian is one of them.

I suggest reading Diane Duane's excellent The Romulan Way, which is now collected in the omnibus The Bloodwing Voyages.
