Do you still wear white?

It's after Labo(u)r Day. Are you still wearing white?

Me? Yep. I kinda have to, but even if not I still would since I don't buy into that silly trend. ;)

Yes. I wear white after labor day.
White suits me very well.

Nope. Only Tom Wolfe can really get away with it. Or if you live in a more tropical environment, you could dress like Mr. Rourke, probably. -- RR

The rule - which I believe is just for us ladies, but I could be wrong about that - is that you aren't supposed to wear predominantly white (e.g., a white suit - a white blouse or shirt doesn't count) after Labor Day, nor are you supposed to wear white shoes. The exceptions are brides, nurses (and other people required by their employment to wear white), and there is also an exception for tennis shoes.

And whether you think it's silly or not, it's not a "trend" since it's at least 100 years old, and probably older than that.

So now that I've got everything all neatly defined for you - no, no, don't thank me - it was my pleasure, truly ;) - no, I don't "wear white" after Labor Day. Of course I could if I wanted to, but I rather like the variety that these seasonal rules give one's wardrobe. It makes pulling that white suit of mine out of storage kind of fun, come Memorial Day.

That is the only thing I learned in college that I will remember to the day I die. My friend Shelby told me about it. Funny thing is Shelby was kind of Tomboy-ish but was incredibly adamant that this was an unbreakable rule. She even went so far as to say she would smack someone if she saw them wearing white after Labor Day.

Does that rule even apply to dudes?

The tradition actually refers to white SHOES. Things like white bucks or white suede wingtips in terms of men's shoes, for instance. So yes it applied to both guys & dolls.

It's become broader over time, but the original tradition makes more sense (otherwise how do you account for, say, white shirts being worn year round? Or winter white sweaters? Or scarves? And so on, and so forth...)

EDIT - I see JustKate has beaten me to the explanation. Thank you! I feel a sartorial weight lifted from my shoulders to know I can rely on someone else to educate the masses. ;)

I only have one pair of white shoes (and they're brown/white spectators anyway) and I don't tend to wear them after Labor Day, because the weather doesn't suit them any more. That's the main reason though, rather than the tradition.

White suits! You've given me an idea. :)

They're pretty fun to wear. I had two, but earlier this year had to give one away as it didn't fit me properly any more. :(

The other one is currently getting tuned up at the tailor, ready for next year though!

I know I do. Here's a picture taken of me earlier today.

I do not. No. Of course, I don't really have anything that is white... I have awesome one shirt that is a really light brown edging toward white, with dark brown buttons. That's about it.

Yeah, it really only refers to shoes. But it basically stems from the 100+ year old fashion "rule" that you don't wear summer colors after Labor Day.

Generally, unless you live somewhere REALLY hot and/or tropical, you wouldn't be wearing white shoes or skirts anyway. But since I am already whiter than Casper the Friendly Ghost, I don't wear white to begin with, because no one would be able to distinguish me from my clothes.

But, really, who the hell cares? As long as you are dressed nicely and appropriately, no harm-no foul.

I'm just excited that I'll be able to transition to my fall clothes soon. Definitely my favorite season for color schemes in clothing!! :)

'Summer colors'... :guffaw: Good one. ;)

seriously though, the only change I make in my whole wardrobe from hot to cold weather is I start wearing sweatshirts instead of T-shirts. Other than that? Exactly the same. (Black Dockers for pants)

I'm amazed that anybody ever pays any attention to "rules" like this.

Of course I dress the same every single day, so what do I know?

Yeah, seeing all the earthy colours again is fun. I was watching a TV programme about tweed yesterday and it made me really, really want to get a bespoke tweed suit. One day I'll drag myself to Norton & Sons and get one made. In a really loud fabric.

I didn't really wear my main white suit much this year because it's not fitting right (it's at the tailor's at the moment getting fixed so I can wear it next year), but I think they are wearable in the right context. I've worn mine to work, for instance. Do it once, everyone will comment. Do it several times over the summer, and it's fine; just another one of your suits.
