For that matter, where was Chris Doohan, James Doohan's son? I don't know what the guy looks like, so I know I missed him but I am wondering wear he was.

Don't know if this was addressed... but Chris was the assistant transporter operator - you really see him when Scotty gets Pike, Kirk and Spock beamed back to together - his character is smiling and shaking his head like he can't believe it. There are glimpses of him during some of the transporter scenes.
