Beneath the Raptor's Wing extract in Star Trek Magazine 21

That time already? Yes, the latest issue of Star Trek Magazine will be hitting US newsstands very shortly, and out in the UK as soon as it can get there. (Pause for the usual complaints asking why it's not there quicker... Done? Good. Moving on.)

This issue includes an exclusive extract from Mike Martin's first Romulan War novel, Beneath The Raptor's Wing, which sees Malcolm and T'Pol giving Archer some unwanted advice and information. The rest of the issue is a humor special, with the main feature written by the Wardilmore team - and for those of you with long memories, there's also a new set of extracts from The Completely Useless Star Trek Encyclopedia specially written for the magazine by Chris Howarth and Steve Lyons. Kevin and Dayton also provide an exclusive coda to I, Mudd, as Harry Mudd tries a prison break...

Other features include movie sound designer Ben Burtt explaining how he recreated the original series effects for the new movie (including some details on how they were done back on the original show), and Armin Shimerman explains how the Ferengi changed from villains to comic relief. Tribbles author David Gerrold provides the Eye of the Beholder column and there's reviews of Nick Meyer's autobiography (and before anybody says anything, yes, I know I don't comment on the factual errors in the book - at the time the review was sent to press, it was hoped that there would be time to correct them before the book was printed), and loads of IDW reviews...

And then after that the TrekLit writers strike back talking about our Top 10 Villains in issue 22 - along with a Lit-connected feature that I'll reveal more details of as soon as I'm allowed!

Now that sounds interesting! Some original fiction in the magazine? How exciting; please say this will be a new regular feature!

This time I'm not complaining about the time it takes, because for issue 22 I'm likely to BE in the States and won't have to complain :)

This all sounds like a wonderful magazine. Can't wait.

No, it's an in-universe feature from the Starfleet archives... We don't have a license to produce original fiction so I have to be very careful exactly what we use.

:bolian: I'm definitely looking forwards to getting this issue. Paul thanks for the update.

I wonder if it's something they'd ever consider. It sounds like a good idea to have the occasional short story, maybe a teaser or a tangent connected with an upcoming book. Or are there financial and legal reasons why they wouldn't want to grant a license like that?

Pocket have that license. We have the teaser for the books in most issues anyway.

So what does the Mudd coda get classified as?

You said it was from the Starfleet archives, but what does that actually mean?

An in universe piece - very different from telling a whole new story. It's the same format as we've used to throw a different perspective on other stories (The Doomsday Machine, and Measure of a Man for example).

I love the The Completely Useless....Encylopedia. It's my favourite Trek book. It's a case of 'its funny cos its true' for all the entries.

Hopefully you'll agree that Chris and Steve haven't lost their edge - even though there are obviously a few restrictions in an official magazine...

As a very unscientific survey, could people PM me on here and let me know when they see copies arrive on local shelves (when and where).
Also subscribers - it'd be useful to know when they arrive with you.
This applies both sides of the Atlantic.

Many thanks

Paul

Just to briefly resurrect this thread to let UK readers know that the issue should be in newsagents/Smiths etc, and subscribers should now have their copies

Paul

Yep. All that glossy new Trek goodness was sitting on a WH Smith's shelf when I stopped by at lunchtime.

Lookin' great alongside all those Film, TV & DVD titles. :techman:

Iffy post in London so I hope it comes this week.

My copy at home is sent along with everyone else's so it's a very good indicator of when they're released. My boss and his boss have the same system, so we quickly find out if there's a discrepancy in sending them out.
Mine arrived today, so hope yours will be soon!
