And the coolest Romulan of them all was/is....

Commander Toreth from "Face of the Enemy" is another favorite of mine - a commander who is very, very Romulan but very, very realistic, too. I just love her. The clash of wills between her and what she believed to be her ship's Tal Shiar operative
(a surgically altered Deanna Troi)
was just wonderful.

Alaimo is good in any role he plays, but I can't picture him being anything but a villain.
I wouldn't say that Gul Macet was exactly a villain (and I'm sure that Nerys Ghemor will have a lot to say about that)., apart from Cardassians in general just being given the role of antagonists to the Federation at that point.

Yes, Toreth was great. TNG was at its best - IMO - in the episodes that shed light on Klingons, Cardassians or Romulans and fleshed them out as more than just stereotypes. "Face of the Enemy" is certainly one of the best Romulan episodes of Star Trek.

*Holds hand up in shame* Have never seen it. I remember reading a spoiler about Major Rakal about the time, but it always seemed like a good idea and now I need to go hunt for it on the net...

^ It is a must for Romulanphiles, I think. Toreth isn't a villain, by the way - that's one of the many really cool things about this episode. She's not an angel, either. She's just a warbird commander trying to do the best job she can. You'll love her, too, I expect.

Right, hats off, she kicked some ass. That actor is freaking awesome, and after doing some checking it seems she played subcommander Taris as well, which may need further inspection. Toreth is exactly as you described, and it was nice to see the Star Empire almost from a neutral perspective there.

Is it just me or did Marina Sirtis make a better Romulan than she did a Betazoid?

Romulan Commander is the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be.

Female Commander comes in close second.

Koval is a distant third

It's a faaaaaaaake guy is an even more distant fourth.

Everyone else are just pale copies.

Favorite Romulan? Well, I probably wouldn't have this username if he wasn't my favorite. I also liked Deanna Troi as a Romulan too. ;)

Badguy #1: The romulan commander is still the coolest, and sweetest.

Badguy #2: Ah yes, she who can not be named.

Oh, the unnamed Romulan played by Mark Lenard is tops, of course -

...another one of my favorites is Admiral Mendak from TNG's "Data's Day." He only has a few minutes in screen, but that's all he needs, IMO.

That's exactly what I was going to say, on both counts. As for Mendak, I recently saw "Data's Day" again and I thought, How is it possible that they never brought him back for another appearance?

I think the Coolest Rommie of All has yet to be seen. They're still so frustratingly under-developed. Of the ones we know about,

-Mark Lenard of course
-The wounded Rommie that Geordi tangles with in "The Enemy"
-T'Rul
-Vreenak
-the female Romulan commander that Kira tangles with in early DS9 S7

What the Rommies really need is a major recurring character to represent them. What actors are out there who would make kick-ass Rommies?

-Michael C. Hall, who of course would never do it :rommie:
-Jeremy Piven, also highly unlikely, but hey we can dream
-Christopher Gorham
-that guy who played Brutus in Rome
-Christine Rose

I have to throw my vote in with Tomalak. Andreas Katsulas brings huge weight and character to any role he's in. Er...brought. I still hate that he died.

Agreed, the man was a legend.

I'd like to see David Warner as a Romulan. He's already been a Klingon and a Cardassian, so why not complete the set?

/\ That gave me a flash of inspiration. The man we need is... David Bowie!

Sub-commander Tom to Ground Control......
Sub-commander Tom to Ground Control......

Power forward torpedoes and may the Romulan Patrician Class be with you....................

Reman Reman, you hate the way I dress
