San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge To Close Sept. 3rd-8th

You just know there was some asshat trying to either enter or leave the city by car tonight who was completely and utterly shocked that the bridge was closed and running into the roadblocks was the first they'd heard of the closure.

I have class in the city tomorrow but I am seriously considering emailing in my work and sleeping in...even though I get on BART at the line, I know its going to become completely packed as I move closer to the city.

Well, it's possible, greatly slim, but possible; that some people haven't heard of what is happening.

Looking at the "Bay Bridge 360" link provided I'm quite impressed with what the Bay Area or California construction crews and DOT is pulling off it seems they really got their act together on this project and doing this job -despite the holiday compensation they have to pay their crews- over the Labor Day weekend is a damn good way to avoid too much transit inconveniences for commuters.

Building the replacement section, remvoing part of the exsisiting bridge, and then "sliding in" the replacement section is pretty damn brilliant. Looks like a marvelous, well tought-out, and well executed project.

Kudos to the California District of Transportation and the two websites provided in the OP are nifty and very well designed, too. :)

Pretty quiet so far today.

My neighbor's daughter, who moved to the city, has pitched camp at their house for the weekend. I suspect many other city folk and staying home or have gone away for the weekend.

Pretty quiet? Maybe in the morning but on the drive home I was listening to the traffic reports and there was a ton of issues, affecting all bridges and up and down 101. I was actually surprised that I was on southbound 280 and I had no problems. Another reason I love that freeway.

Pardon my ignorance of Bay Area traffic and roads, but...

Isn't closing the Oakland-Bay Bridge going to cause monumental traffic problems?

Yeah, but there have been warnings and talk about it for months now. This is the third Labor Day weekend they've done it and the Bay Area will get by. As for what they are doing, I wish them all the luck in the world. Hopefully like last year they can get done quickly (And efficiently) to open early. It's great that finally something is being done and they have reached this big stage of the work.

True -- in comparison, the DC Metro "authorities" (or whatever silliness they call themselves) decided to close 3 entire stations, including the one at Washington Reagan National Airport, for the entire Labor Day weekend for "Track Maintenance"... And didn't announce such closing until last Tuesday/Wednesday. Right there's a portrait of Idiocy in Action. :wtf:

It's been great watching how the new Bay Bridge is progressing. I travel out there at least once a month (thankfully -- need my CA fix!) for work, so that's a good "time lapse" to see how much they accomplish between trips.

Cheers,
-CM-

Here's a cool video from that article showing time lapse of the sections being rolled out and rolled in.
That's a nice job. :techman:

Was kind of funny watching the crew elevator zipping up and down while the swap-in of the new section was in progress.

If this were in my state, they'd reopen the bridge as scheduled, then spend the next two years having a study on what types of studies they can do about the crack.
That was what most of the 90s were like, where the Bay Bridge was concerned. The quake was in October of 1989, the bridge reopened to traffic in November, and construction on the replacement for the eastern span finally began in 2002, after years of studies during which there was a series temporary closures for various retrofittings of the old bridge structure.

So was the crack from when the Mega Shark and Giant Octopus were fighting it out? :)

That was the Golden Gate Bridge. ;)

I'm impressed that they got it open today. All of the news reports were saying it wouldn't be until early tomorrow morning.

Just wanted to get the word out to those affected to find other means of transportation tomorrow and probably the foreseeable future. A piece of Metal from the repaired part of the crack found on the bridge fell today causing surprisingly one minor injury and the bridge is shut down indefinitely.

Oh, snap.

Good thing I don't commute into SF anymore. They really need to hurry up and get the new bridge finished so they can finally scrap this old one. 2013 is way too far off, at this rate the whole thing is going to sink into the Bay before then.

Geez, that makes me feel better about my commute. The BART isn't going to be fun at all for the foreseeable future.

So this week the Bridge closes, and it's still closed, and there was an oil spill in the bay that might have caused some inconvenience to Ferry Service. Gee, what a nice time to be living in the Bay Area ain't it?
