Do people really like condiments that much?

I don't mind a lot, but I suppose everyone has their idea of what constitutes "a lot". I don't like it so messy that it drips all over the place while I'm trying to eat... though a little dripping is expected, especially with a sub. I prefer that to going too light and having my sandwich be too dry.

Steak tartar is one of the most wonderful dishes in the world.

/.../ I only want that spicy mustard--and boy, is it spicy. Just the way I like it.

I really don't get the appeal of mayo on anything, to be honest, but then most people find my fascination with mustard weird, too.
I too luv mustard, I think I have six or seven kinds in my fridge right now -and that is not unusual :rommie:

When it comes to mayonnaise, though, I prefer making it myself for those rare occasions where I really want some.

I always try to keep yellow mustard, spicy brown mustard, and dijon on hand. Sometimes I'll have honey mustard, too. Mmmm.

I hate mayo and tomatoes and it seems like every place I go wants to put them on my food.

Try hating mayo, tomatoes and lettuce. I hate lettuce so much, I can taste its bitter vileness it if it was just put on the bun for a minute and removed. If its on the side, fine, I can just remove it from my plate. If any of those things have been on the bun, uh-uh, I'll be needing a new bun.

Your response is about the same as the one I have to ranch dressing. Holy God. It's the most disgusting sauce I've ever tasted. It's pure fat with a hint of garlic. Ugh.

It's unfair of me, but when I see someone ordering ranch on anything, I immediately think, "You're a neckbeard living in a basement." (Well, except when my wife gets ranch as a side of her chicken wings, in which case I just bite my tongue.)

I kind of think the same thing about Ranch. People want it on and with everything, you'd think the stuff was Elvis' cum or something the way so many people love it.

I really don't know ranch dressing, but what you just described is garlic mayonnaise! :rommie:

Ranch Dressing is a popular dressing in America, I believe first made and distributed by Hidden Valley Ranch, it consists of mayonaise, buttermilk, sour cream, garlic and some other seasonings and flavors ( I believe onion.) People here put it on/use it as a dipping sauce with everything.

People even dip pizza in it. Not just the crust the pizza itself. If you go into a popular restaurant and look at their appetizer-menu chances are 75% of it will be available with ranch dressing as a dipping sauce for the appetizer.

Buffalo wings, bread sticks, mozzerella sticks. People treat ranch dressing as if it were ketchup or something. It is prolific.

It also tastes like vomit.

^I looked it up once and it sounded to me like a greased up version of the popular (in the seventies) Thousand Islands dressing.

I never liked the idea of using the same dressing on a lot of different things though, with ketchup as a possible exception; it goes well with both pork sausages and beef burgers...

Ranch is awesome, and Ranch on pizza is quite delicious, even though I reserve it for the crust.

I like a nice portion on Mayo on my sandwiches, but nothing overdone.

Thundercloud Subs here in Austin take an ice cream scooper (I kid you not) and slap a big ole dollup of guacamole on their sandwiches.

Mmmmm....so good! :)

I always got a kick out of watching them make the veggie sandwich. It's really a guacamole sandwich with olives and such stuck into the heap of greeny goodness.

I love Subway sandwiches. I always order a BMT with some of that chipotle sauce on it.

As for other things, like hotdogs, I like ketchup (don't worry, Timby, if I ever go to Chicago I will leave that off) and deli mustard on them.

About steak tartare: I know that raw meat is involved. How is that safe to eat, given all the attention to foodborne illnesses we've got?

This is why I avoid Subway like the plague. Every time I get a sandwich there, no matter what type of meat I get, the whole thing tastes like nothing but mustard.

Togos is far superior, IMO.
Togos twenty years ago was far superior to Togos today, but they're still better than Subway. The people at Subway haven't got a clue (and Quizno's is worse than clueless, they're just wrong.)

The owner-operated deli is the best. They know that they themselves are the brand and (unlike the drones you'll find working the line at Subway) they pay attention when you say "No mayonnaise and no tomato, please!"

About steak tartare: I know that raw meat is involved. How is that safe to eat, given all the attention to foodborne illnesses we've got?
Safe food-handling practices.

Food-borne illnesses are nearly always a result of poor and unsanitary preparation at some stage or of failure to maintain proper storage temperatures.

  • People's tastes cover a wide range, so there are people that like more mayonnaise than you (at least Subway claims they are using a reduced fat version). Some like mustard, oil and vinegar or southwest chipottle instead.
  • As in other chains there are variations between locations. There may be different quality and customer service levels at a store in another state or even across town. Chain A might be better in my neighborhood while Chain B is better in your neighborhood.
  • In addition to condiment types and quantity, One person might prefer chain A's recipes for things like bread and deli meats while another person likes chain B's recipes.

  • The same goes for the produce people like in their subs.

^ I got hooked on southwestern style ranch when I went to our local Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken. They had these sandwich minis with a breast of chicken, slice of cheese and a smattering of "southwestern style ranch", they called it. I ordered one out of curiousity and found it was absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, they don't sell them anymore, but they were great!

But doesn't raw meat usually have some bacteria in it, that can only be killed by cooking?

The bacteria found on steak only lives on the surface, so as long as you just cook the outside or you cut the outside layer off, you should be perfectly safe. This is the reason ground beef should be cooked more, because the surface layer of the beef has been ground up and mixed in with the rest.

Okay I will try to cover everything I've read in this thread so far:

I actually want to ask for MORE mayo and mustard on my Subway sandwiches. It's probably the chains I go to, the area I live in, or the type of sandwich I order, but I always feel like I can barely taste the condiments on my sandwiches.

I love ranch on everything, especially salad and pizza. I would never eat salad unless it was drenched in some type of dressing, lettuce tastes icky by itself or with little flavoring. And when I think about what's in ranch dressing I get kind of grossed out, but the taste is just irresistable. God it's just so good.

I would put Sonic above many fast food chains. Maybe it's just the ones in my area, but they are always very nice, very clean, and with unique menu items you can't get at most places. Like chili dogs, I only know of one other fast food place that serves them around here and Sonic's are far superior. They have tater tots, which for some reason aren't popular at other fast food chains around here either. And of course they have the slush puppies, which I haven't been able to find anywhere else at all except once at the state fair. I would put Sonic faaaar above McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, etc.

Togos and Quiznos are okay but I don't like any of their sandwich choices. I only like chicken sandwiches and theirs taste weird.

Raw meat is icky too. Southwestern style ranch is yummy.

Oh, and although I love ranch on most things and enjoy a larger serving of condiments than most in this thread, I am not even close to overweight and I'm not a "neckbeard." I just enjoy stuff that tastes good.

Exactly. So how can it be safe to eat raw meat, if there is always bacteria on it?
