Scary moments for kids in the original series!

I think that TOS had a few powerful moments that were just scary as for many if us as kids and would like to read what impressions and memories everyone has as a kid watching the show.

One particularly scary episode which smacked of a little sci-fi horror was the man trap, the salt sucking monster was terrifying as a kid watching it try and stalk the crew members one by one. Remember the moment when it tried to make its move on Uhura! Wow! This left a powerful impression on me as a kid.

So what moments do you have that left a fearful impression on you as a child?

Miramani being killed effed with me greatly. Decker going into the Planet Killer as well.
And when McCoy was losing it in the operation in Spock's Brain (that was when I took the ep seriously though...).

there was one where there was some sort of disease that made people's faces turn colors
that one scared me as a kid

The only one I can think of offhand (Hey, it was a long time ago, ya know!) is the faceless crewwoman in "Charlie X."

The sound effects of the Lights of Zetar attempting to talk through Lt. Mira Romaine and the woman on Memory Alpha were somewhat creepy.

I was afraid of cats when I was little, so the big black pussy in "Catspaw" gave me nightmares.

Not scary, but when I was very young, my asshole older brothers would wait until things looked grim and then say, "Oh, this was the last episode filmed. They all die at the end."

I bought it every damned time.

Joe, bitter

I remember being quite frightened by the big hairy things in the fog from "Galileo 7" - that actually gave me nightmares. I think I was aroung 5 or 6.

I still find "The Wolf in the Fold" to be a creepy episode - but in a good way!

Another vote for the faceless woman in Charlie X. What disturbed me was not only the idea of not having a face, but that it was such a sadistic thing to do to somebody. You make somebody disappear, it's creepy, but it doesn't seem as malicious as wiping out somebody's face.

The first time I watched The Devil in the Dark as a kid. The opening scene with the attack and the charred remains left behind. Powerful stuff for me as a little kid. The rest of the show down in the cave tunnels was scary until the reveal at the end.

Honestly I first watched TOS in syndicated reruns in the early 90s and I was a kid and I can't recall anything that scared me.

When the show would end with Balok's face right at the end of the closing credits, I'd leave the room. Especially if I was watching alone, I didn't want to dare turn the TV off. Balok might know.

I'm serious.

Not to mention leaving them alive and conscious without nostrils or a mouth.

When I was a kid, the creatures from "Operation Annihilate" used to scare me a lot. I really couldn't watch when one of those fried egg things attacked Spock. Then you see all these people suffering from terrible PAIN, and - as the cherry of the cake - Spock gets blinded by the high intensity light, and remarks that it is an "equitable trade". That moment just put me over the edge - still gives me the creeps...
