Holy !@#$, Disney buys Marvel Comics???

That brings up an interesting point. Disney forced Marvel to change Howard's design to less resemble Donald. I wonder if future comic endeavors would still require that change.

Of course, since Steve Gerber's passed away, they probably shouldn't bother with Howard the Duck comics, anyway.

But...but...it's Howard the Duck!

I know, but he's sucked every time Gerber hasn't been involved.

He's one of those characters whose voice is specific to his creator. It'd be like letting someone else write Peanuts. It just doesn't work.

^^ I heard that they're bringing back Peanuts by Robert Crumb. It's going to be "edgy," "Kickass" and "kewl." ;)

Don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet, but Stan Lee seems to be a fan of the merger.

I don't read Marvel comics, so I don't really have any concerns or thoughts about this news (although I will admit I was rather surprised by it). I think it has the potential to be a good thing, but I guess people will just have to wait and see. Oh, and not all of Disney's subsidiaries release material that is appropriate for children (just look at some of the films Miramax has come out with over the past few years), so I think the fear that Disney will sanitize Marvel to make it completely kid-friendly is an unfounded one.

Disney want to capture a specific market with this, they aren't going to throw their money away by driving away the market Marvel already has.

The fact that Disney has released adult-oriented films through Miramax, Touchstone Pictures, and Hollywood Pictures isn't necessarily salient to how they'll end up dealing with Marvel. Miramax has always been completely walled off from Disney in terms of branding and synergy. It's not as if employees dressed as Vincent Vega walk around Disney theme parks. Marvel characters, on the other hand, will likely be integrated into Disney theme parks and merchandising. That may lead Disney to take steps to see that Marvel products don't stray too from the kind of branding that Disney is comfortable with.

Right now they're saying that Marvel will be essentially autonomous, but that's the approach they initially took when they bought Miramax, and 12 years later the Weinsteins were forced out and Miramax is a shadow of its former self. Things will likely continue as normal at Marvel for some years to come, but what the outcome will be in the longer term is impossible to say.

Well I can certainly see Disney latching onto Spider-Man, the Hulk, Captain America and maybe even the Fantastic Four in a big way. They've got a lot of recognition, they're characters that can easily be made into fuzzy feel good characters. Even though I want my fuckin' Nazi stompin' Cap. And badass Hulk SMASH! Buuut The FF have always been a "family" and if they let Reed and Sue have 'lil' Franklin and Valeria they could have some up and comin' Disney kid stars play them. Course then it would SUCK. Unless they let the Marvel writers do the writing and scripting and leave those pedantic, trite Disney writers the hell out of it.

I think in some ways, this COULD help both companies in terms of their tv and movie offerings. Marvel has always had a great crop of creative teams and writing staff. They can still be "family friendly" but they won't pander to kids. They won't have say a Spider-Girl series - which honestly COULD be done now with their link to Disney. But so long as they keep the writers. DeFalco needs to be involved. But that's a made for Disney Channel comic. Teenage daughter of a big time retired superhero finds she has the same powers. Goes out and tries to follow in her father's footsteps, but said father doesn't want her to end up like him. But the mom's supportive (who just happens to be a former model and now fashion exec - gee... so that sorta gets in the Sex in the City/Lipstick Jungle demo), she's friends with her father's greatest enemy's son. Her trainer is her father's lab partner, who also used to be a small time super-hero. Just so long as there's no happy sappy "moral" sololique at the end of every episode and the actress playing Spider-Girl can act, not just look pretty and pose in spandex and make anyone over 18 cringe because they think she's kinda hot.

Marvel will also have the chance to have the backing to keep doing what they're doing. Honestly the 4 billion is a bargain for Disney but what does it mean to Marvel? Does the 4 billion let them hire the people that they've wanted? Or snap up rights to characters they've been trying to get for a while? Does this let them produce more movies on their own? Does this mean they can lower the prices of their comics and make them more available?

Only time will tell I guess.

We'll have to wait and see, but the Marvel we've known thus far is no longer there. We're in the era of "NuMarvel" and well... this should be interesting.

Well, in terms of film production they won't be able to latch onto the Marvel characters that have already been optioned to other studios in contracts that don't have cancellation clauses. Sony will control the Spider-Man film rights and Fox will control the X-Men and Fantastic Four film rights in perpetuity for as long as they continue to produce films featuring those characters in a timely fashion.

The 4 billion is going to Marvel's stockholders, etc., not to Marvel the company.

^Rule #34...

I just googled Wolverine/Miss Piggy porn (out of morbid curiosity, you understand) and failed to prove the rule's accuracy this time!

I'm sure it's out there, but I saw enough disturbing Wolvie imagery by the second or third page of image results that I stopped searching.

Good news, everyone.

I was worried for a little while as were the rest of you are now. But after reading this article you all will feel much better about the Disney/Marvel Merger.

Before reading the below paragraph from Niki Finke you need to know who she is talking about. Bob Iger is the head honcho at Disney and has been after Marvel for quite awhile. Ike Perlmutter is the head honcho CEO at Marvel. These were the two guys responsible for the merger. Now you may read. This from Niki Finke:

Howard the Duck!

Done properly this time. ;)

That would be nice. However, I watched the 1986 version all the time when I was a kid. Even now, it's still a guilty pleasure. I want that particle gun he used in the film's climax.

Maybe now Disney and Square can team up to make a new Kingdom Hearts game that'll include some of the Marvel characters.
