Seasons In Australia

The Boy Who Cried Worf

I have a question I have always wondered about. Above and below the equator the season are reversed so up here June, July, and August are our hot months while down there December, January, and February are their hot months. But do they still call December, January, and February winter and say thing like "Yeah it's getting hot, winter is right around the corner", or do they call those months summer? And when they hear Christmas songs like White Christmas and Winter Wonderland do they get confused because their Christmases are so hot, or do they celebrate Christmas on June 25th?

We still have Christmas in December, when it is hot, and it's the official start of summer. Depending on where in Australia it can be summer weather in mid October to until mid March.

No, just envious.

I think I can safely speak on behalf of Canada when I say we would gladly exchange climates for some heat around Christmas. ;)

Yes my wife liked it when she had her first hot Christmas at the end of 2007 - made a change for usual winter Christmas.

Though from what I've read the Winter in Australia this year hasn't been seasonal - tempratures in the high 20s and closing on the 30s isn't normal.

and I haven't worked out whicih is worse - the summers in Ontario with the humidity or the summers in Adeladie where it's much hotter but it's generally a dry heat.

We actually do have some Christmas songs and traditions of our own such as Six White Boomers.

It is quite common for Australians to have a barbeque on Christmas Day or spend Christmas Day at the beach.

Ah I get it. So basically your seasons are like this:

December-March: Summer
March-June: Autumn
June-September: Winter
September-December: Spring

Thanks. That's one more great mystery I can cross off my list.:)

Thought this thread would be about the botanist who wanted Australia to change from a European system of seasons to one that made more sense for our climate.

Here is an article about the changes.

Where in bloody Australia are you posting from? Down here in Tasmania is is only 4.13pm Wednesday.

That makes a lot of sense. The traditional start times for the seasons are wrong pretty much everywhere these days too.
