Noel Gallagher leaves Oasis

Noel Gallagher Quits Oasis:
"It's with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight," Gallagher wrote [on the band's website]. "People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer."

A year ago, I might've thought this was a tough-love move from Noel to get Liam to shape up. Now, I'm taking this seriously, after interviews with MOJO and Q that indicate that Noel was done with Liam.

Oasis was probably on hiatus anyway, at least in terms of new music; Noel had indicated that he intended to do a solo album, with the follow-up to Dig Out Your Soul coming in about five years.

The Guardian muses, "Critics will indeed write what they want, but there's no escaping the fact this probably signals the end of arguably Britain's greatest ever rock'n'roll band." So, does Oasis now become Liam and a bunch of sidemen, while Noel goes off and does his own thing? Time will tell.

"Britain's greatest ever rock n' roll band"?!?

Pretty sure that's been long settled (The Beatles) and everyone else is fighting for 2nd place, at best...

Well first of all, people annoyingly seem to overlook the fact that this has happened several times before! Each time it happens, the bothers end up reconciling their differences, and Oasis gets back on track. I think I read someone that even Noel shrugged off his "solo album", which every year the story seems to crop up again.

They'll be back together in a month or so.

Oh by the way, thanks for overlooking The Beetles, Blur, U2 (even though I hate them), and many other great bands that are better than Oasis. (As much as I love Oasis, and they're second only to Muse in my books, Oasis haven't really done much, two great albums, and the rest are slightly under their bar).

They managed without Liam for a short few whiles, and their line-up has changed a lot over the years (remember Guigsy and Bonehead?). It's somewhat presumptuous to think that without Noel, there's no band. On the other hand, most if not all their best musical moments came with Noel, so whatever big direction they take it will certainly be a different Oasis.

Sounds like he couldn't roll with it any more.
Some might say that, sure. Here's hoping they reflect on their good times and don't look back in anger.

I'm weary of even posting in this, as I generally avoid music topics on here, as talking about music on the TrekBBS is mostly a massive waste of time. Unless you regularly masturbate over Rush albums you just get slagged off my some Yank prick for happening to like anything but.

All I'll say is Oasis are my favourite band, and yeah, bit shit this happened. Although this…

I agree with. My first thought on hearing the news.
And actually all we've got to go on thus far is that one blog entry by Noel. Not saying I don't believe it, but I'd like to wait to hear what Liam, Gem Archer and Andy Bell also have to say.

I just watched a little piece on BBC news about it, and as usual I fucking HATE how the media always portray them. "oooh Liam's been known to have a bit of temper" and show some VT footage from about 1997. Yeah, that's 12 years ago mate. And they always have to show that clip of Noel at 10 Downing Street, yawn.
"oooh they leave in separate cars", yeah they've always done that.
Just like Jacko, the media (notably the shitrag redtops) love tearing artists/celebs/actors down, so I'm sure they're all rubbing their grubby little mitts together right now.

I saw them live at the start of this tour (June 4th, Manchester Heaton Park) and I can safely say it was by far the best gig I've ever been to.
Live Forever

Seems an appropriate song to listen to

U2 are Irish
And it's The 'Beatles'

Oops, I always do that. And the Beatles originated from Liverpool, did they not?

Here's Jimmy Carr's take on it

Sounds about right to me.

Yes, and the city is just a tiny bit proud of the fact. I would also argue that the Beatles were more a pop band than a rock band, but anyway thats not the topic.

My first reaction was 'again?'
My second was its a publicity stunt. They've hated each other for years and dealt with it. So why break up now?

Aren't they the band that just ripped off Doctor Who?

Doctor Who ripped them off. Retroactively. :shifty:

Muse are possibly Britain's best band right now, or at the very least they're one of the few with a scrap of originality.

I think The Beatles, the Rolling Stones and most importantly Queen might just argue with the Britain's greatest band part.

"Britain's greatest ever rock'n'roll band"? What are they drinking in the pubs these days?

No, no Hermoid, T'Baio was right. It's not much known, but Muse travel around in a small blue box that's bigger on the inside, traveling around time and space. Matt is the Doctor (haha), Dom is the girly sidekick and Chris is the entourage. It's even less known, but Doctor Who ripped off Muse, when they accidently traveled back to the 60's to refuel their "MARDIS" (I'm sure you can work out what I did there :D).

Okay, my bad. They didn't rip off Doctor Who, they ripped off Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire.

An excellent blog on the subject from the NME website

“Because we need each other/We believe in one another...”

There must be times when Noel Gallagher curses the day he wrote that oh-so-easily interpreted chorus to ‘Acquiesce’. Today being one of them. According to the older Gallagher, his involvement in Oasis is over. “It's with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight,” he said on Oasis’s website, following an alleged altercation at a show last night in Paris. “People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.”

We have, of course, been here before, in 1994, 1995, 1996, 199... you get the idea. It’s hard to recall a harmonious Oasis tour ever. Noel left in Los Angeles in September 1994, taking offence at Liam changing the words to ‘Live Forever’ (“Maybe I don’t really wanna know/Why you pick your nose”). Then, he took off, planning to “do the Hunter S fucking Thompson thing”, but was back stage left shortly afterwards. Post Knebworth in 1996, with ‘(What’s The Story)...’ riding high in the American charts, Liam refused to go on a US tour, claiming that he had to “find a house”. Oasis continued without him, with Noel taking on vocal duties. Liam turned up a few dates into the tour. Then Noel went home following another fight.

The nadir of Gallagher relations came in Barcelona in 2000. Forced to cancel a gig after then-drummer Alan White had damaged his hand, Oasis embarked on a marathon drinking session, culminating in Liam questioning the legitimacy of Noel’s daughter, Anais (an act which Noel says he has never apologised for). The older Gallagher left the tour immediately, leaving Liam to draft in guitarist Matt Deighton and soldier on through the remaining European dates (which means no one – not Liam, not Noel, not anyone – has played at every Oasis show ever. Fuckin’ weird, eh?). Noel rejoined Oasis for the UK shows, but on a now infamous second night at Wembley Stadium, Liam showed up after a marathon drinking session and spent the set goading his brother. “Lazy-arse has been sat on his back all year!” he snarled at one point, then going on to mime digging a grave behind his brother as he sung the chorus to ‘Acquiesce’.

And so on and so on and so on.

What is different this time is that – thanks to a somewhat belated grasping of the power of that internet thing to vent one’s spleen by both Gallagher brothers – the public have had a much more candid glimpse into relations within the Oasis camp. Only last week Liam was berating Noel for hanging out at a U2 aftershow on his Twitter; the week before that, through his ‘Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere’ posts on the Oasis website, Noel was accusing Liam of being “on his man-period” at a particularly volatile iTunes show at the Roundhouse in Camden. Liam subsequently claimed he had “been made to feel uncomfortable these last few months”. They’ve always slagged each other off through the press; now though, they are doing it every other day on the internet.

The simple truth is this: for his entire adult life, Liam has been encouraged by the world to behave as much like a badass rock’n’roll star as he possibly can, which he has done to frequently glorious effect. That’s what people want from him. But there is one person in the entire world who finds his antics increasingly tiresome and that is Noel. He still loves being in Oasis, too, but just cannot be arsed dealing with his brother any more. Noel is now 42 years of age and a father of two. His priorities are different, and he is quite patently fed up of being part of rock’n’roll’s biggest soap opera. Sure, both Gallaghers are lippy, witty people and so can’t resist the occasional – OK, frequent – dig at each other, but they don’t actually speak at all. Maybe, this time, the time HAS come.

So, the future? Well immediately, Noel has got a guest slot to do with psychedelic warlords Amorphous Androgynous at Matter in September; his brother has got his fashion label Pretty Green to occupy his time with. Liam has stated both that he has no interest in making a solo record, and also that, as it was his band before Noel joined, that he would carry on Oasis should Noel ever leave. Noel, meanwhile, has often hinted that he’d like to do a solo record, and that he has loads of songs that aren’t Oasis songs. Bottom line: music-wise, we haven’t heard the last of either Gallagher. Not by a long way.

Personally speaking, as someone who had his life changed by Oasis, as someone who once queued up for 19 hours straight outside Shepherd’s Bush Empire to buy an Oasis ticket, as someone who had a flight booked to Milan to see Oasis on Sunday, I’m gutted. But if this really is the last of Oasis in any shape or form, I’ll be seriously surprised.

Now, time for some Acquiesce and remember the good times

Oh well, i have no doubt Noel is going to busy himself now with full time commitment to the running of their cool refreshing juice drinks company....I'm hoping this will lead at long last to pear and Raspberry flavour some time soon.
