American counterculture.
Civil rights movement, women's movement, gay and lesbian movements. American music: rock, Jazz, blues, bluegrass, folk, ragtime. A certain dynamism and mobility that "can" lead to a great deal of creativity and some social change.
The beauty of the land. Still has some unspoiled places-Let's try to preserve as much as possible, shall we?
The Bill of Rights ( except the 2nd) and the 13th,14th,15th and 19th amendments.

From my point of view (while on vacation there):-
The people were friendly, welcoming and polite.
There's some very beautiful places there.
Good food.

The fact that I can shake Bill Clinton's hand and tell him that I didn't approve of NAFTA but it was still an honor to meet him. (Back when he was president.)

^I got to shake Clinton's hand as well. It was only a couple of months after he took office, so NAFTA hadn't passed yet. Otherwise, I would have expressed my displeasure as well. I have to say though, it was exciting to meet him. He's certainly charismatic.

The Great Wall is awesome---keeps out barbarians, which is a big help in the early game.
Pretty much this. I couldn't imagine living in a country where baseball didn't exist.
But you can't build the Hoover Dam any more -- you have to build the Three Gorges Dam.
The Apostolic Palace is a nice addition 'though.

Actually I'd have to go with the Japanese on that one. Because they can't show the goodies they tend to get really creative in other areas. Germans come a close second as long as they aren't doing chickens or rolling in scat.
Oh, they can certainly have their merits. I'd be more specific, but I don't want to derail this thread in naught but porn territory. 
I do want to say, that very often when expats and tourists open up to me, they tend to say things like,
