....but I'm a bit worried that they are a series/compilation, and that I can't read them all stand alone. That I can't just go in to a shop and buy one without having read the ten previous novels. Is this the case?

I don't mind spoilers... could somebody please give me a brief summary of the state of the Star Trek universe in the novels? I read something about a massive Borg Invasion? The death of Janeway? Fill me in on what I've been missing! :D

Thanks!

Ok, here goes. I've explained the events of Before Dishonor, the Destiny Trilogy, some of the Titan series and Articles of the Federation, and the post-Destiny books such as Losing the Peace, Full Circle and A Singular Destiny. It's brief, but the plots are well and truly spoiled, so only click on if you're sure you don't mind. :)

Really, everyone, BIG SPOILERS FOR POST-NEMESIS FICTION.

Janeway was assimilated by a Borg cube cut off from the Collective proper due to the collapse of the transwarp network. She was then killed when the cube was destroyed. About eight months later, the collective launched a full scale invasion of the Beta Quadrant/Alpha Quadrant through a series of subspace tunnels, their goal annihalation rather than assimilation (the Federation was now considered unworthy of assimilation, too dangerous to live). Dozens of worlds were destroyed, including Deneva, Risa, Khitomer and Coridan. Qo'noS, Andor, Vulcan and Tellar were hit hard, but are intact. The invasion ended when the Caeliar- a race unknowingly involved in the original creation of the Borg- were convinced to interfere and liberate the Borg drones. The Borg are now gone, the former drones now a part of the Caeliar, who have departed. In the aftermath of the invasion, the Federation has outfitted a fleet with quantum slipstream drive (successfully used during the crisis) to go into the Delta Quadrant and confirm the Borg are truly gone. Voyager is leading the fleet. Back home, the nations of known space have been shaken by the invasion. The Gorn, Breen, Tholians, Tzenkethi, Romulan Star Empire and Kinshaya have formed a tight-knit alliance named the "Typhon Pact", having realized during the crisis there is strength in peaceful co-operation. The Federation and Klingons- rebuilding from the devestation- are tense about this, and have invited the Ferengi, Cardassians, Talarians and the breakaway Imperial Romulan State to sign the Khitomer Accords. (Oh, yeah, the Romulan Star Empire had split into two prior to the invasion, with the breakaway Imperial Romulan State led by self-proclaimed Empress Donatra, who opposes Praetor Tal'aura of the RSE (Tal'aura took power in the aftermath of "Nemesis"). The two have a personal feud as well as a political one, due to Tal'aura's execution of Donatra's lover, an admiral who attempted to remove Tal'aura from power).

Wow, thanks for that Deranged_Nasat I really don't mind book spoilers and enjoyed reading your summary! It all sounds so exciting... if only all that had played out on television!

So, can I read the books out of order? Or do I need to pick them up in order?

It sounds so shallow how Janeway dies... :( Please tell me that her death is more heroic then made out in your summary?! Are there any lose ends left for her possible return in the novels?

I started reading the Destiny trilogy without reading any Trek literature of the last decade or so and it all seemed to make sense.

So, can I read the books out of order? Or do I need to pick them up in order?

Yes you can, all of the Novels fill you in on what happened in the last Novel if the story warrants it, although, say the Destiny Trilogy is a Trilogy and the bestest way to get through it is read books one, two and then three. All the others, as I've said, will recap with in the story itself.

Here, I did some character spoilers:

Picard: Recently married Beverly, and Beverly is pregnant with (I believe) a daughter who has not yet been born. Opposed sending Voyager into the DQ to look for the Borg, as he is confident that they are truly gone forever. Once again declined a promotion to Admiral.

Riker: Having a daughter with Deanna that will be named after Tasha Yar.

Ezri Dax: Leaves DS9 sometime after 2378 (we don't know the details yet), eventually becomes first officer of the USS Aventine (the quantum-slipstream outfitted starship mentioned before). Becomes captain after the previous captain dies in combat. Discovers the wreckage of the USS Challenger NX-02 (from Enterprise) in the Gamma Quadrant.

B'Elanna Torres and Tom Paris: Paris is the first officer of Voyager, and also faked his own daughter and wife's deaths in order to keep a band of rogue Klingons from locating them. Outfitted a new shuttlecraft with a quantum-slipstream drive to hide both B'Elanna and Miral in the Delta Quadrant. With Voyager on the way to the DQ, they are supposed to meet up at some point. No one knows B'Elanna and Miral are alive except for Paris and Emperor Kahless (long story). In addition, Admiral Owen Paris (Tom's father) was killed during the Borg invasion of Destiny.

Chakotay: Was Captain of Voyager until shortly after the events of Destiny. Lost his job due to his massive grief over the death of Janeway. As of 'Full Circle', he is no longer captain and may be stuck in the AQ while Voyager and its fleet goes to the DQ.

Seven: Lost her connection to the Collective after Destiny eliminated the Borg. Struggles with her loss of identity and her remaining Borg implants, which disintegrated following the Borg's merging with the Caeliar. Like Chakotay, still dealing with the death of Janeway. So far she has declined to join Voyager on its return trip to the DQ.

Tuvok: Serving as Chief of Security on the Titan. One of his sons was killed on Deneva when the Borg attacked.
I can provide any other character's status if necessary, but I listed the characters with the most development/new things going on.

Well, others might disagree, but if you want the full order for all of them, I'd personally suggest this. However, if you want to skip right to the Destiny Trilogy that would, as others have said, work fine, although possibly picking up "Greater Than the Sum" first, which leads into it and also recaps "Before Dishonor" quite well.

I'd suggest reading them all, but that's not essential, just because almost all of them are good.

Death in Winter (TNG)
Taking Wing (Titan)
The Red King (Titan)
Resistance (TNG)
Orion's Hounds (Titan)
Q and A (TNG)
Before Dishonor (TNG)
Sword of Damocles (Titan)
Articles of the Federation (which covers a timespan encompasing everything since The Red King up until this point in the timeline)
Greater Than the Sum (TNG)

Destiny: Gods of Night
Destiny: Mere Mortals
Destiny: Lost Souls

Losing the Peace (TNG)
A Singular Destiny
Full Circle (Voy)
Over a Torrent Sea (Titan)

The novel "Full Circle" gives more details about Janeway's motivations and reasonings in going on the mission where she died. Many fans of the character have concluded that it helped make her death more meaningful than they otherwise felt it was.

Wow. Some very, very drastic changes to the universe there! Have the writers got something against Voyager characters?! Hopefully all these 'falls from grace' will lead to some form or reformation of the Voyager crew in a future novel. Let them all band back together for some heroic and meaningful mission!

Definitely going to start checking some of the books out. I take it TNG/VOY/DS9 have all merged in the novels now then? Each book dealing with characters from all series?

Sorry to quibble, my friend, but you got one of the new character's sex wrong, and a certain ship's name ;).

Other than that, great summary!

In my eyes, "Full Circle" is a great book that propells the "Voyager" characters back to the status they deserve. :) I know quite a few "Voyager" fans agree. I heartedly recommend it.

The series are still mostly segregated, with the exception of big crossover "Destiny", but they are part of the same continuity and so characters do pop up in other series on occasion. Don't worry, though, each series still retains its distinct identity and can be read in isolation if you wish. :)

Really digging this thread guys, thanks for all the input! :)

One more question, what's happening with Data? PLEASE tell me he's back in some form! B4?

^ nope, sorry.

as much as I wanted him back, I do believe resurrecting Data is not a good idea. One, using B4 as a substitute for Data is like trying to get a 386 to run Vista, the hardware is not sophisticated enough to run the software. Two, it is unfair to B4, who is he's own person and shouldn't be a vessel for someone else.

Unlike 'Countdown', they've shelved B4. Early in the post-Nemesis TNG books he was shipped off to the Daystrom Institute for research and hasn't really been mentioned again.

As the Deranged One explained, the individual series will continue independently, despite the occasional crossover. The next Voyager novel, Unworthy, will come out next month.

Regarding DS9... Ezri Dax is a primary character in the Destiny trilogy, but the main DS9 narrative is still lagging behind the other series by about four years of story time. A forthcoming novel, The Rough Beasts of Empire, will catch things up; but that won't be until late next year.

He was mentioned again in Greater Than the Sum, as a reference to events which were depicted in Articles of the Federation.

Not that I've read these, but having read other Trek novels out of order, I've found it's good to read the best ones first. So I will probably tackle Destiny once I get out of this Old School phase.

And, as Christopher said, those events are discussed in Greater than the Sum.

I just want to chime in like I do in post_nemsis threads and say that I'd love to see some novels set comfortably n the middle of TNG's 7-year run.
I've read the Destiny books and they were really good, but I'm just saying I miss having everyone there together.
There have been , and likely will be, many stories crammed into Kirk's 5 year mission. I'd love to see a few more on the Enterprise D.
I'm done whining ;)
