what TV shows should exist, but don't?

Yet the biggest shows on television have generally been some sort of police/doctor/lawyer program.

Ii could also be that most TV industry execs are greedy motherfuckers who are only interested in the bottom line and the lowest common denominator as well, and can't give us the kind of shows the OP wants to see.

I would settle for an intelligent, gripping drama for grown ups, starring Ian McShane, that does NOT get cancelled. :vulcan:

The biggest movie blockbusters of all time have almost always been some sort of genre work (sci-fi, fantasy).

Yet the biggest shows on television have generally been some sort of police/doctor/lawyer program.

Something about the medium or the audience, I suppose.
What works in one evidently does not in the other.

I think it's just a budget thing. On movies, they can splurge on exotic special effects. TV doesn't have the budget to do that week in, week out. Even the few SF/F shows that we do get have to cut corners somewhere, whether it's aliens that all look like humans with funny foreheads or making every alien planet look like the same pine forest in Canada or else just not spending money on any production values at all (like the old Doctor Who series or the final season of Earth: Final Conflict).

So far, no one has made a modern day series specifically about a central character rising to prominence and influence in accordance with the prophecies about a messiah/antichrist.

Kinda like a TV version of The Omega Code?

Faith the Vampire Slayer

Damn skippy! Although I enjoyed Tru Calling, I think I would have liked a Faith series better. Plus, it would have given Joss enormous potential to keep the Buffyverse going, since UPN seemed hungry for more at the time.

I came up with my own idea for a Buffy/Angel spin-off called The Initiative. It would have paired up Riley Finn with the recently captured fugitive Gwen Raiden. Andrew would have been their gadget guy. I figure, if Buffy was the high school show and Angel was the P.I./law show, this would have been like a vampire version of Alias.

While I liked Billy Boyd & Dominic Monaghan in The Lord of the Rings, I think they were both far more entertaining in the behind the scenes footage than in the actual films. That's why I think they need to move in together for a reality series called Billy & Dom Need Money. The 2 of them then wander around L.A. (or New York or London or Sydney or Vancouver or wherever) working various odd jobs and bringing their quirky sense of humor & camaraderie to it. It's like The Simple Life except that the actors & the audience are both much more clearly in on the joke.

On March 20, 2008, TemporalFlux made a pitch for a legal series that I like to call Goddess of Justice:
The blindfold of Themis, the Greek goddess of justice, is stolen. The other gods care little, but Themis's sense of order will not let her rest until the scales are balanced for the offense. The only way Themis can find the culprit is to finally open her eyes, and she is left aghast at how the world has warped and broken the very system she helped to create.

No chaos can be ordered until the flaws are sorted, and Themis takes on the guise of an attorney to explore each facet of the injustice we have fostered through the guise of law. Her powers of prophecy limited by our more complicated world, Themis is largely left to her own wits to sate her passion for individual, human justice in a world that no longer believes in her.

The mystery of the thief also looms as we begin to suspect the introduction of Themis to our society was an intentional domino belonging to a larger scheme. If Themis discovers she is doing more harm than good, how will she judge herself?

I will continue to repost his pitch in every appropriate thread on this BBS until I see this series appear on some network's fall schedule.

Haven't seen that one, but I just read up on it. Sounds like it's pretty bad, yet I'm intigued. I made a note of it and maybe I'll get around to checking it out one of these days.

The kind of show I'd want to see probably wouldn't be based solely on Christianity. It'd be a story put together based on elements from many religions and prophecies along with a good dose of original thought about what would happen if a real individual like this were to show up. It would also contain some metaphysical elements, but wouldn't have the blatant stuff you see in supernatural thrillers. And of course, it would be HBO quality drama.

Honestly, I never saw the first one. But the sequel, Megiddo: Omega Code 2, has some cool battle sequences. Plus, Michael Biehn plays the President of the United States.:techman:

I don't expect the shows I want to see to be money-losers. It's okay that they want to make as much money as possible. The trick is to get the right show topics on the right networks. Lost makes money. Dexter makes money. Breaking Bad makes money. Sometimes the lowest common denominator approach is the most successful and sometimes the opposite is the winning formula. I think that a bigger range of show topics could be financially successful, but TV is very conservative (probably because execs so fear greenlighting flops that they act conservatively in an effort to survive.)

As much as I enjoyed Lovejoy, I'd hardly call it "gripping drama."

Yeah, more cute & quirky like Monk or Psych.

Corpse, I hadn't seen that pitch from TemporalFlux before... Thanks for reposting it.

I want THAT show. And that's coming from someone who isn't into law shows.

Looks like Omega Code 2 is a prequel.

Here's the original thread it came from. It does sound pretty good. Reminds me of Cupid. It would be interesting to see this thing actually get pitched.

I want a steampunk show similar to the Victorian/Edwardian flashbacks in Torchwood about Jules Verne-style tech during the decade 1900-1910, possibly based around an investigative team like Warehouse 13 who seek out the unusual or possibly try to keep Western Civilization on a track that won't endanger Humanity. I can see it now-an episode where Our Heroes divert investment/development efforts away from electric cars because it could lead to a better understanding of atomic theory due to the development of hydrogen fuel cells-thus leading to a quicker development of atomic weapons. The episode would wrap with Our Heroes happy that autos would be powered by gasoline, giving the Human Race more time to learn mastery of itself before the power to harm the planet as a whole becomes ours. *snicker*

Oh, you have no idea. You ever seen the Canadian sitcom Made in Canada? It's one of the most brilliant shows ever created. It's about unscrupulous TV executives and it details much of the petty studio politics like this. You can buy it @ http://www.amazon.com/Made-Canada-I...ef=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1251328372&sr=1-1 . However, the show is way out of print, so just the first 6 episodes will run you about $95. (The show is brilliant enough to justify that price but I'll understand if you're hesitant to merely take my word for it.)

EDIT: Or, for free... http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=20963FBEB1782164&search_query=made+in+canada+mercer
(Seriously, the damn studio needs to put out the remaining 4 seasons!)
