I remember back in '78 when I heard the news of Star Trek's return by way of TMP- I was extatic. And, as happy as I was that it was made, it just wasn't the Trek I grew up with. How could it be? Where was Matt Jefferies, Fred Steiner, Irving Feinberg?

Each creative team leaves it's own mark, like a fingerprint.

Each incarnation of Trek is totally unique.

TOS is the best, IMO. Always will be, despite my hopes for where Abrams could take it.

Thoughts? Comments? Flames?

In my opinion, JJ Abrams recaptured the very essence of TOS in the new film.

Well, he certainly upped the energy and character of the thing back into the zone of the original series. That much is certain.

Kirk's knowing or not knowing David was his son is open to debate. If you look at the way things happen in the tunnel outside the underground Genesis cave, it's edited in such a way where it really seems Kirk DID certainly know about David, and simply didn't know what David looked like these days (apparently because Carol wanted it that way).

Kirk freezes the moment he hears David say "I'm Doctor Marcus!"

He knew David was his son, and that's why he reacted that way the moment he heard THIS was David.

No, I think they would have stayed in touch is all.

I didn't like the idea Kirk having a son he didn't know. With Indy, that I could deal with, but those were different times.
I didn't like the actor they got to play his son.
I didn't like that they felt it necessary to kill off the character in the next flick.

IMO, IV salvaged a mess. V was given up on by the studio. And VI gave us a nice finale.
But, in the end, a seriously wrong detour for the franchise.

Incidentally, does anyone remember the show that the David Marcus actor started on? "Square Pegs", wasn't it? One of the first TV characters to sport a walkman and a weirdo at that...

Sadly he died only a few years afterward from AIDS-related conditions if I remember correctly...
