I need money!!!

^-- You could go there over some period of time.

Fly to Singapore or Hong Kong and spend some time there. Next stop: Dubai (ok, you might want to leave there asap, or lounge in the Burj al Arab). Then, somewhere in mainland Europe, followed by London and finally Iceland.

You'll be away for months! =)

Unfortunately even the flight flight to Singapore from Sydney (about 8hrs 30 minutes) is well outsde my comfort zone.

I can comfortably make the flight from Hobart to Adelaide (90 minutes) so long as I don't have too long sitting at the airport or standing in line. I imagine a flight to New Zealand (three and half hours) would be getting very closed to my limit especially if I add the airport time.

Hm.
Hobart -> Adelaide -> Sydney -> Darwin -> Bali -> Kuala Lumpur -> Singapore -> ...? =)

Well, or a nice boat trip from Australia to Europe is perhaps a possibility. :)

While the big passenger liners of old have all but disappeared, a lot of freighters have passenger cabins. Prices tend to be about twice that of airfare, which, considering they offer room, board, and all the leg room you could want, isn't all that bad.

An extra $500 a week? EVERY week? For how long?!

If we're talking about this becoming a regular addition to my budget, then I know exactly what I would do: move. I absolutely love the neighborhood and area that I live in, but I came to the conclusion quite some time ago that my condo is cursed. I've also discovered that I cannot live with people above me - not because they're noisy (they're not) but because the pipes and waterflow have made me paranoid (I've had to deal with a couple of water leaks since I've lived here, and it isn't fun). With an extra $500 a week (which is $2000 a month) I would have no issue moving into a townhome or possibly even a single-family home.

If this was just going to be a temporary thing, then obviously I would use the money for something else. Save some money up to take a nice trip. Maybe save some and then do some renovations/home improvement. Would love to re-do the bathrooms. I've still got just over a year left on my car loan. I could pay it off much faster.

Hmmmm. Right at this moment I would go off unemployment and actually start paying my bills and all the rent without getting half from my girlfriend. Yes I have become a bitter and frustrated man.:brickwall::angryrazz:

Ain't THAT the truth!!!! If I had a bunch of $$, I'd save up, pay off my car and all my bills and then maybe go on a secluded island for about a week and relax stress-free. I'm also a very bitter woman myself right at the moment. :brickwall:

So, folks, I am wondering - if you all of a sudden had an extra $500 each week what would you do with it?

My answer would be different if I knew it was consistent extra income, or whether it was a time-limited deal. Either way, I'd use it to smooth my plans to largely leave my current job in a couple of years time and move to a portfolio career.

If it was consistent extra income, I'd simply factor it into my income after retiring from the current job, letting me work even fewer days afterwards. If it was time-limited, I'd save it up, with the intent of using it as a lump sum to pay off some of either one of my mortgages when interest rates start climbing back up in a couple of years time or so. If I used it against the buy-to-let mortgage, I'd increase my profit margin on the rent income which would give me more income. Or if the maths favoured paying off some of my own house's mortgage, that would lower my monthly expenditure, with much the same effect on my disposable income.

I'm not sure I'd notice. I already make more than I spend, so what's a bit more beyond that?

However, if I had to be targeting something, I'd save it up to make a down payment on a small airplane.

I'd spend it all on music gear. First thing I'd do is save up enough to buy myself a custom Suhr and a Cornford Mk50

I'd use it to help my youngest daughter get through college and my wife get through graduate school. And I'd buy another car.

Save it. That's always my inclination with money. I think I'm getting to be a bit of a savings bore, actually. :(

I'd beef up my savings account, pay off some loans and once that's done treat myself to a nice gold Cartier watch. Then I'd probably put some toward paying down my mortgage as well as go shoe shopping more often. :)

I'd probably save most of the money, but I might buy I few DVD sets I've been pondering to get, some new shoes, maybe a spa treatment...

As long as it's saving for a reason then I don't think you've got a problem.

My own problem (which I'm still working on) is that I've got several savings scheme that I contribute to "just because I should". OK, with a theoretical aim of increasing a retirement pot, but without real focus. Now that's being a savings bore!

I've shifted things towards aiming towards building a pot for a much more short term goal (to manage a partial change of career in two years time) and that's made me happier that most of those savings are now structured. OK, there's still a fair bit left that I won't completely switch out of until I actually make the leap into the new plan (because I'm a natural conservative on these matters) but on balance, having a clear mix of short and long term goals helps the savings process feel constructive. Beyond just seeing a figure rise, which admittedly is sort of fun, in a geeky way. :o

Nice choices. ;)

I have a rose gold Cartier tank Americaine somewhere on my hypothetical wish list, but suspect I might be too "sensible" to ever actually get it.... :vulcan:

Let's see...I'd tuck it away to pay for the kidlets' college.

Okay, I'd tuck most of it away. Some of it I'd spend on books. :)

"I'd pay bills." "I'd put it in a savings account." BORING!

Saving it is fine, but are you saving it for a specific purpose?

I would use the extra income to move and, hopefully, buy my own house.

In that house, I would have an unfinished basement. I would then use the extra money to finish that basement, building a fancy bar and an entertainment center. I might even buy a foosball table.

And then I'd buy the new 2010 Ford Taurus because it's SO PRETTY!

That's my girlfriends one and only line and if I give her money she says 'Squeeze!'. Se La Vie.

For general future expenses, but mostly would be saving so we could have kids. I really do want to have children. But I want to make sure that my relationship with my husband is quite solid, and I really want to make sure that we could not just provide for children, but provide well. As much as I want kids, I'm not bringing any into the world unless I know they'll be well taken care of.

I've worked with so many sleezy hoebag mothers for so long, I almost forgot that some people actually bother thinking about their childrens' welfare. Good job.

Nevertheless...LAME! Buy something shiny!
