Just type his name in GOOGLE NEWS SEARCH and look at all the stories about his reading Palin's twitters last night...the guy, once again, has made himself important. No other STAR TREK star, none, can come close to shatner's star.

why? Because he is the Shatner. And, its just yet another example as to why he is still part of our collective culture..still affecting it. Where as most of the other "Trek" cast members (all shows) are..well...long forgotten.

My guess is that the thinking among the writers on that late-night talk show went something like this:

"God, Palin's rhetoric is so incoherent it's like some bizarre beat poetry. We should do a skit where someone reads it as though it were poetry. Who's someone who has a comic reputation for dreadful spoken-word performances? Hey, William Shatner! He did that Transformed Man spoken-word album back in the '60s and people have been making fun of it ever since! And who's always first in line to make fun of William Shatner's reputation?" (dials phone) "Hey, Bill, we have an excuse for you to appear on camera!" (Five seconds later, Shatner is in the studio.)
