When the refit was introduced, did it have as much negative comments as the Nu-E is getting?

There was no Internet then. Hard to believe, but true.

To the extent that there was frequent communication between many trekkies - fanzines, conventions and so forth - yes, the Nu-E was criticized quite a bit, as were other aspects of the visual redesign most notably the uniforms.

After the film came out, the complaints about the look of the ship diminished, but not the complaints about the costuming.

And, of course, a million other complaints were born regarding just how plodding and what an overall disappointment the movie was.

Nu-E is a disgrace to the fleet. It must be obliterated.

I'm certain that the passage of time is not going to change my mind about the ship's design, as it is just plain ugly ... my opinion only, of course.

Nu-E is the least of my concerns as the ridiculous storyline was even more ugly. Hopefully, the sequel will be original and logical which will then make me forget about Frankenprise.

I don't like her interiors, but she's a fair sight better looking on the outside than a lot of other recently-designed Starfleet ships from the more contemporaneous shows.

The bridge looked very bright compared to any previous set. Engineering looked comparable to the exterior of the ship ... butt ugly.

The bridge was far superior to engineering. At worst, the bridge looked more advanced than the 24th century ships of the later Prime universe shows. Somewhere more along the lines of the 29th century Federation timeships. But engineering? A beer brewery. And WAY too big for a 1,000-foot-long starship with a flatter, more squashed secondary hull than the old 1701.

The Relativity didn't look terribly advanced to me. It looked like a contemporary of Voyager, except the shape was all funny and they had a transporter on the bridge. The TCARS didn't look all that fancy TBH.

I guess you have points. Mind you, the Relativity was constructed on a weekly TV budget and ten years ago we didn't yet have some of the flatscreen HD computer displays and advanced set track lighting we do now.

I think they could have incorporated a little more technology into engineering (besides just the big water tubes), but I didn't really have a problem with the general look.

It looked like a real place with real parts where stuff actually got DONE, instead of those pristine, super-sterile places from the spinoffs and movies where people just stood around with blinking scanners pointed at who knows what. lol

Just remember, that E is larger, so the secondary hull is actually BIGGER, just shaped differently than TOS' E.
