Sorry, but the NuEnt Engineering Hull is Phail

So, you're saying that Chrisisall is a weirdo too? :rommie:
Weirdo? It is an honourable title then.;)
It's good that you like it because the Nu-E is what we're stuck with. I just wish that I would feel the same. :(
You could if you dropped your preconceived notions of what she should look like in another reality.;)

I'm not expecting it to look exactly like the refit. I just love the design of it.

I guess the alternate reality is ugly so the Nu-E blends in perfectly.

It's a horrible design. The neck is too far back and basically starts at the back of the ship, the nacelles are comically bulbous, the hull looks like a half-eaten cake, the warp pylons are bent and look like they could buckle at any moment... the only decent bit is the saucer.
I agree totally! The reason the saucer looks a little good is because they took it almost straight from the refit and we all know that is the best Starship design ever! :)

I've warmed to this mishmash ever so slightly, and Dennis is quite correct about the weirdness being rooted in comparisons with the old design. But this isn't close to being my favorite take on the starship.

I like the saucer and neck, although former needs signage and details on the underside, and the latter tucks too far back. I don't like the shape of the secondary hull ... it's too far removed from a functional cylinder for my tastes with that huge fantail. Although it's less cramped if the ship is on the 700+ meter scale. I like the cowling on the nacelles, but wish it were a bit more subtle.

I loathe the bend on the nacelle pylons ... I have no idea what that's supposed to bring to the design table. There's nothing functional about it and it certainly doesn't look cool. Straight pylons look more functional, stronger, and less wasteful.

I also hate a parabolic dish without some kind of equipment at the focus. In the TMP-refit, it was possible to explain the glowing cover as some sort of radome with the actual antenna secured behind it, but in this case, the navigaitonal deflector sticks out of it's mounting completely. There's no denying that that's the actual dish and ... what's it focusing on again?

I think JJ's Enterprise is beautiful, a trekkies dream; except for that sliced out engineering section. You could have packed so much more cool stuff in there: bowling allies, motocross arenas, handball courts, for gods sake!

Did JJ think that was too much space already in the Ent?

Starship design has come along way since 1964, the NuEnt is great except for that inverted bunny hill underneath.

It may look sleeker somehow, but 5 years out there on the frontier don't you need some space for storage?

C

I don't know, after seeing the movie again, I think I'm partial to the original Enterprise. The new Enterprise is cool looking, but I still perfer the old Enterprise.

I think every difference between the Enterprise and the TOS/Refit one is for the better, except that the nacelles are too close together for comfort.

IMO the Alternate Universe Enterprise is an ugly piece of shit from the outside, but most of its interior sets are pretty good. Engineering sucks though.

Look again my man, the saucer's leading upper edge has been rounded off noticeably, and the inverted curve on the underside seen on the other versions is non existant in this one. I could go on and on about less drastic changes. Suffice it to say that like the rest of the ship, the saucer if very different as well, but for some reason, many just don't see it.;)

The ship is fine looking and worthy of its name, as I more or less said in the previous 3.489 threads on the subject. :bolian:

Is it just me, or does it look hella weird when viewed from above?

The nacelles are all tucked inwards. The ship looks like its squeezing through a dense convention crowd instead of soaring through space.

Looks big n' purty from all the other usual angles, though.

Sort of reminds me of Voyager when she'd retract her warp nacelles for a warp jump. Not that I don't think the Enterprise is a better-looking ship...I do...but one of the issues I still have with her is she's too narrow and skinny from certain angles.

I'm surprised more people haven't warmed up to it. I though it was a bit radical at first too, but now I absolutely love it.

I think the rounder shapes and more swooping curves work really well, and the whole design jells together perfectly. The ship looks graceful yet powerful at the same time.

It may not rank above the TOS-E or Refit, but it's certainly better than all the other Enterprises out there.

I think if the nacelles were a little farther apart in there original positions I would like it alot better!

When the refit was introduced, did it have as much negative comments as the Nu-E is getting?

I'm guessing not because it was an improvement over the original.

This Frankenprise is just a bunch of disproportionately sized and shaped sections hacked together to be be 'radical', but comes off as plain ugly.

Oh, you two are my new best friends! :techman:

No, there was not- because there was no internet to hash it out. There WAS a lot of discussion about it at conventions though, mostly concerning the loss of the deflector DISH, and it was something all us early movie Trek fans had to come to grips with. But little tykes that grew up with both versions had it a bit easier, I conjure.:)

In many ways yes; in some ways not.

Get back to me on that after the next two movies, won't ya?:guffaw:
