Treaty Of Algeron (Spoilers Star Trek XI)

Romulus is destroyed in Star Trek XI and as far as I can tell the Romulan senate was wiped out and billions of Romulans killed and this IMO means the end of the Romulan Empire. Sure there are colonies but realistically the Romulan Empire is gone and has been replaced by a chaotic area of space with colonies not knowing what's going on.

With this in mind is the treaty of Algeron still active? The treaty was with the Romulan Star Empire and a specific government that no longer exists. Are any treaties the Feds had with Romulus still active now Romulus is gone?

It seems to me that all previous treaties are now null and void and the Federation can ignore the Neutral Zone and start using claoking devices.

To argue that the Romulan Star Empire would collapse with the destruction of Romulus is to argue that the Federation would collapse with the destruction of Earth. There has to be hundreds of worlds with Romulan populations which could rebuild or maintain the empire. The Senate could be replaced (it's hard to imagine that was the entire Senate anyways, I thought it was bigger. It was probably the continuing committee or something). Plus, the fleet wouldn't be destroyed. It would be a crushing blow, yes, but it wouldn't destroy the Star Empire.

It could be an end to the Neutral Zone, however, if subject worlds rebel or things like that.

That's not canon.
It is on a screen, is it not? ;)

I know. But since the focus of what is on screen will probably be based on the timeline of the recent movie for a while, and the recent novels and the storyline for Star Trek Online have all made an effort to be coherent and cohesive, I feel that canon for the Prime Timeline may be seen as moving to those sources. At least until actual screen canon says otherwise.

I'm afraid they're not consistent. They've shared some important ideas -- the rise of the Imperial Romulan State, for instance -- but the STO timeline does not include the Borg invasion from the Destiny trilogy that so devastated known space, nor does it include the rise of the Typhon Pact.

I can't speak to the (non) existance of the Romulan Star Empire in the aftermath.

But for a real-world example, consider the atomic weapons treaties made with the Soviet Union. When the USSR ceased to exist as a gov't, were all the prior treaties defunct and nations freed to proliferate?
