The pics ive seen of the new gate make it look like the chevrons spin around the gate, not the symbols. Anyone else get that impression?
The gate itself spins.

As shown in the recent SGU teaser trailer “Survive,” the entire gate spins while dialing (not just an inner track).
Interesting, id just thought that ball was a light above the thing... makes sense for an ancient gate to not function as efficiently as a later gate...
Actually, the Milky Way gate network came first, then this Destiny version, with the Pegasus gates afterwards. The Seeder ship and Destiny were supposedly launched at the height of the Ancient's civilization here on Earth.
And in The Fifth Race, the Asgard had a MW version gate, which makes things even more head spinning (from an in universe perspective, while we know, of course, that the producers never considered different gate models until the newer shows cropped up).
I was only going by the info that was put out over the last few months. Reading the Gateworld link however, it appears new infomation was been added that does suggest the Universe gates came first.Actually, the Milky Way gate network came first, then this Destiny version, with the Pegasus gates afterwards. Are you sure? Cause to me, it seems like the Destiny gates are older than the Milky Way. To me, that makes more sense.
They would have gone from a completely full spinning gate, to a half spinning gate (Milky Way) to a non-spinning gate (Pegasus.) That seems like a natural progression to me. Also, the Destiny gates exhaust steam out of the floor after dialing, also showing their technological earliness.
To me, it makes sense that the Destiny gates were first. The Ancients came over to the Milky Way via ships, and while here, they developed their first fully working gate model. They put it on a ship, and sent a ship out to the far reaches of the universe on a journey to seed the universe with gates. While that was going on, they further advanced their design and seeded the Milky Way with those gates. Then of course later on the Pegasus with even newer gates.
The Destiny is one of their oldest ships we've ever seen from the Ancients, and is supposed to be steampunkish to show its relative technological primitiveness.
That is how I see it, perhaps I'm wrong, but that is how I see it unless I'm terribly mistaken.
Yet more retconning/fleshing out of the Ancient's backstory. Previously, we were lead to believe they left the original home space, later dubbed the Ori Galaxy, and came to Dakara, then found Earth with no mention of stopping anyplace else...It is believed that both the Destiny and this Stargate design predate the Milky Way and Pegasus Galaxy Stargate designs, helping to fill in the span of Ancient / Alteran history after the race that built the gates left their home galaxy with a design in mind (Stargate: The Ark of Truth) and when they set up the familiar SG-1 gate network in our own galaxy.
The timeline established for the franchise’s mythology so far allows that span of time to be hundreds, thousands, or potentially even millions of years.
It would also make sense because nine chevrons have to be dialed in order to reach Destiny; and knowing this, the later stargate designs (Milky Way, Pegasus) had nine chevrons.Actually, the Milky Way gate network came first, then this Destiny version, with the Pegasus gates afterwards. See I think the Destiny and its Stargates were sent out before they made contact with the races like the Asgard, Furlings or Nox. And it was only during the age of the Milky Way gates that they had their great 4 race alliance.

I'm not quite sure how that implies what you said at all...Yet more retconning/fleshing out of the Ancient's backstory. As I said, the early info put out implied that Destiny and the Seeder were sent out after the Milky Way gate system was constructed, as it was launched from Earth before Atlantis was built. Now, in the text I just read today from the Gateworld link, it seems as if they are suggesting that this gate was developed first, before they built the MW network. It would also make sense because nine chevrons have to be dialed in order to reach Destiny; and knowing this, the later stargate designs (Milky Way, Pegasus) had nine chevrons.

No worries, I can see how there might have been confusion based on the early reports. As I said, the early info put out implied that Destiny and the Seeder were sent out after the Milky Way gate system was constructed, as it was launched from Earth before Atlantis was built.
