Places that are special to you.

Your desert trip sounds amazing. Did you take any snaps? Were you comfortable in your tents, or did you feel like you were roughing it?

I hope I can get this to work

Mrs Cheeseyfatmonkey!

The tents were ok and comfortable. I however was not as I had very bad trots and had to spend most of night back and forthing to the chemical loo with only the light of my blackberry to guide me.

Oh wow, that looks absolutely gorgeous. What a panorama! Thanks for posting those. The tents look quite spectacular. :D

I know how bad holiday upsets can be... Number one thing to pack before anything else - the trots pills!

There are many such places for me, but perhaps one of the most significant is where we hold our annual church camp.

This is a picture I took early one morning during morning quiet time. The reasons for its emotional power are too many to go into now. Suffice it to say that it is an ideal place to "Be still and know the (He) is God.

To ZR, it's great to have that special place. Just be sure to keep making new memories in new places. It almost sounds like you stopped!

I remember the first time I went back to the first childhood home that I had many memories about. Really fond memories. I left when I was 5 and returned for my first visit 17 years later. It was neat to see. All the typical reactions, etc. But, I had one really cool/weird thing happen. As I was in the car by my old house, I had a full blown flashback to the day we moved away. literally to the moment where we were driving away from the house for the last time. Full of sadness, I was mentally vowing to return soon but knowing as a kid I would not be able to do that. I could see and hear everything as if I was there for a minute or so. For a moment, I was that 5 year old boy again. It was as if those 2 points in time were connected. I've never had anything like that happen.

Anyway, for special places know, I count Santorini, Greece at the top, and Greece in general. No family connection, just love the country.

The Serengeti. Very powerful experience. For a moment, I felt part of the fabric of nature... a strong sensation of home. A very real epiphany moment.

That's neat, I hope to go there for the first time next summer. Any suggestions? Times, places that are particularly good. I'm just starting to look into it.

That's the thing. I keep moving about all over the place, seeing new things, that it's hard to feel an attachment to a new place (or indeed new people) now, compared to that place when I was stationary for 8 whole years. I still have new memories, but they aren't as special to me as the most special ones.

Delhi (India) - Spent many winter breaks here. Got to know my relatives, and gained so much perspective from my time there. I'm spoiled as it is, and naive, and a host of other things. But if I hadn't spent so much time in India I'd be a much shallower, less empathic person. They find ways to be happy with so much less than what we have here. Other places in India are special to me too, but I'm not going to list them all!

India in general is a special place to me. I've been to Delhi and enjoyed it. Bombay (now Mumbai) is my adopted Indian home. Kerala is amazing. So, many nice places. Too many to list as you say!

I see! Well, it's nice to have that anchor then! :)

I went there in the latter part of the year, sometime in Nov/Dec... it seemed to be the time of the great wildebeest migration, saw them all crossing a strong river in their thousands, with 20% or more being carried away with the water... :( Quite a spectacular scene - a line of wildebeests as far as the eye can see, extending way out over the horizon. I think that's a pretty good time to go. Not too hot, not cold either (maybe a sweater in the evenings), didn't seem to be the wet season. Pretty perfect conditions as far as I could tell. I don't know what it would be like in our summertime on the otherhand...

Don't worry about places, if you book a safari for more than 3 days, the guides will give you a pretty thorough tour of almost everything on the plains... be ready to be up at the crack of dawn - usually 5am and coming in to rest only at sunset! They plan every last detail, including when to stop and rest, you don't need to plan at all if you don't want to. Very knowledgeable about all the wildlife, of course, and how to approach the hunting lions and such... we saw 3 lions feasting on a zebra from just a few yards away! They pick you up from your hotel and return you there when you're done too!

If you want to know the tour guides I used, I can look into that for you, I do hope they're still around - I went there almost 6 years ago, come to think of it. You're going to love it! :D

^^ Thanks for the info! I'm even more excited about it! If you have any guide info handy, maybe PM it to me. But, don't go out of your way to find it if it's not readily available. Thanks!

Every time I drive past Children's Hospital in Seattle (which isn't very often these days), I feel a great fondness for the place. I spent several weeks there when I was 12 after being diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. It sounds odd that this would be my special place, but I can't think of anywhere else that doesn't have intensely negative memories attached. In the hospital I was sick, and was poked and prodded, hooked to IVs and oxygen and heart moniters, and all the other things that should scare a child -- but it didn't scare me at all. For those few weeks I was out of an unhappy house and an unhappy school life. It was an escape from the fighting, the money problems, the drugs, and all the other things that were making me miserable. For the first time in a long time people were paying attention to me. The staff at Children's Hospital were wonderful, and made me feel safe and comfortable. Most significantly, my whole family came together peacefully to take care of me, and that was wonderful.

Wow! Fab photos, cheeseyfatmonkey. That looks like the trip of a lifetime. (I love the pic of the beetle. :))

Thank you for sharing those!
I had a good laugh at the name Mrs cheeseyfatmonkey.

Here's two that are perhaps a little contradictory, but whatever.

The first is where I live, Ottawa. I've been here four years, and it's an incredibly beautiful, vibrant city and I can't imagine trading it for anywhere else. I love living here.

The second is much more general, the backwoods of Ontario. I've always loved camping, and Ontario has an incredible diversity of lakes and rivers. One of the best places I've ever been is Killarney Provincial Park, it's awesome:

(None of these are mine, I found them online)

Shoeless Joe's. It's where my husband and I went on our first date.

The one we went to was closed down, though. Booo.

I'm so sorry that better (more caring) people haven't found their way into your life. I was lucky enough to find kindness and generosity outside of my family. I don't know of anything that can fix one's broken formative years, but there are those special people out there that can make the rest of life a wonderful consolation prize.

Of course the hardest part is letting them into your life in the first place.

Both of my special places are associated with special (non-family) people in my life. A professor who watched out for me throughout my education and is still a close friend today is who I associate with UCSD, and my first wife (and the first time I felt unconditional love) is who I associate with the Coronado Cays.

^Thanks for the kind words. Truthfully, my family are very loving and very close, it was bad luck and the consistently poor handling of very difficult situations that led to the periods of unhappiness in my childhood. My life has been one of extremes, with exceptionally good experiences and exceptionally bad experiences coloring my memories of every place I've been. In general, both the cities I've lived in -- NYC and Seattle -- are very important to me. They are as alive as any individual in my life, and are friends to me -- though not always good friends. Now, before I continue to bore with my slef-indulgent introspection, I'm going to enjoy the pain relevers and muscle relaxents!

Here's a few places that are very special to me:

Katz's Deli - my favorite restaurant. There I am known as the 'cheesesteak guy'.

Yankee Stadium. Need I say more? ;) In fact, the specific part *of* the stadium that is most special to me is Section 203 of the bleachers, for reasons I hope are obvious by now...

Citi Field
