It's nice that he liked it and all but Rod Roddenberry really doesn't have any more insight into Star Trek than the rest of us do so it's really just another opinion.

I tend to agree. Doesn't he run Roddenberry Enterprises, making $$ off of his father's legacy?

personally, if i had a legacy, that's what i would want my kids to do. this could equally be seen as carrying on the family business. he could just as easily be living off the proceeds and having a grand old time, i dunno, screwing starlets and doing coke.

and i don't wanna say that his opinion counts more than anybody else's, but it's comforting to know that someone who was probably in on a lot of the inside story is satisfied with this flick.

If he runs it well and provides quality entertainment and a chance for new talent to break through, why the hell not?

That's like saying John Romita, Jr. is just an extension of his father, isn't it?

The guy is young yet, too, so perhaps he'll make his mark through RE and do his father proud.

But yeah, his opinion isn't what matters--John Q. Public's is.

[Edit: Well, 35 is not all that young, but he's doing the best he can...]

    Ture enough I guess.

But he is carrying the blood of the creation of the series and the 'verse.

That said, I really liked the movie, too bad it has killed the prime timeline.

But then, neither do all those people who are just fans of Trek but it doesn't stop them from declaring with great authority: "This is not Gene's Trek!" "Roddenberry is rolling in his grave" etc.

The kid's right. Abrams delivered the goods. And with a ton of style and class.

Carrying on the family business is exactly what it is, in fact. Lincoln Enterprises (originally Star Trek Enterprises) was founded by Gene and Majel in 1967 and is now headed by Rod Roddenberry, operating via the Roddenberry.com website.

No, that doesn't lend his opinion of the movie that much more weight than the average person's, but in the past he's generally come out as a supporter of Star Trek projects because he actually likes them, rather than simply because it's more profitable for him. He's a fan with a somewhat unique perspective.

He has control over a certain archive.
There is a big project now in the works that perhaps you have not heard of.

Roddenberry Prods. docu. series from 500 hours of BTS over 20 years

It will most likely be on Blu-ray as well as DVD even though all the archival footage will be just upconverted standard definition.

Hadn't looked at that closely before. Interesting to see Toolbox Productions is in on it; I used to walk by their studio in West L.A. quite often -- it was only a few blocks from where I was living at the time.

I agree with this. However, his opinion certainly doesn't count for any more than yours or mine. Hell, Gene Roddenberry's opinion didn't count for much after TMP. :)

    good for him.

I think a lot of people would wanna distance themselves from "that nerdy trek thing" but he is in it to carry on the legacy and pick up where his parents left off with the family business!
