Welcome to the Church Of Ryan

Does this church have altarboys?

Because then we're headed for a SHITLOAD of problems down the road.

That's an LOL if I ever saw one coming!!

But with Church on hand for nuTrek, I just find it kind of weird that he also worked so much on the Star Wars prequels. Not that it matters. It just seems kind of strange... like if Andrew Probert had designed the Millenium Falcon.

I don't understand what's so weird about it. The design work on the PT was beautiful. The work on nuTrek was beautiful.

Church took the best of both Jefferies and Probert and did what he could. And the result wasn't half-bad.

Wasn't half-good, either. :P

It'll never be my favorite Enterprise. EVER. By a longshot. But I've grown to like it, if almost exclusively for the external appearance and not for the shit-awful interiors. Even the badass, oversized afterburner nacelles have become more acceptable in my eyes.

It's closer to the classic design when you take the time to inspect her lines more closely. Omit the bigass nacelles and the ship feels a lot like the TMP-era movie ship.

I think that, like so many other things in the movie, there was a fine line that had to be walked....they had to keep the spirit of TOS but update with today's technology.
I had no problem with the ship. But then, i liked engineering....;)

The bridge and engine room need the most work. And the turbolifts need to be voice-activated with hanging handles as a nod to classic TOS.

Glory be to the Ryan; and to the Holy Enterprise:
As it was in 1966, is now, and ever shall be,
Trek without end. Amen.

Okay, joke's out of the way.;)

Let's discuss the good stuff he did on Trek, Transformers, & the upcoming Avatar and John Carter of Mars, or anything else he did that you liked.

John Carter concept art can be found here:

(Although he didn't do the actual art itself- he designed ships & stuff.)

Go here for Avatar:

And, no negativity or design-bashing, or I'll use this:

Ok, the new Enterprise just doesn't do it for me (I was really let down by it...) That said, what did they do right?

First and formost the most of the cast are ringers to the original series.

The single engine/odd engine starships are top of my list for visuals. Plus Jar-jar made the propulshion system look what I expected it to be. I never got/understood the TMP jibberish drive...no matter how many times I tried to make sense of it.

The selection of uniforms with a tip of the hat to TOS was great also, (Never cared for the RCMP version in the films.)

There are other good points as well but these are the ones I think are worth mentioning.

I think a lot of the negativity around the nuEnt would have been avoided if they'd chosen a better angle for the first pic they put out. That garnered a lot of negative reactions, and I can't entirely blame them; the ship didn't look particularly great from that angle to me, either. But after we started to see some better views of it, I really came to appreciate the design.

True, the very first picture of the ship released by Paramount was not the most flattering angle of the vessel by any stretch. I'd have preferred a head-on view or a shot from above looking down on the saucer.

I would have to agree as well. It wasn't the best shot of her for our first look. That's the main reason that it took me a little while to warm up to the new look. But like I said earlier, now that I've seen her in action, I likie.

Agreed. Ultimately, it took seeing it in motion for me to really like it.

I must admit I didn't like some aspects of the design when I first saw the picture of the new Enterprise. But long before the movie came out I looked at any picture or well done fan art I could find and it really grew on me to where it is my favorite star ship design.

I think it's the best Federation starship design since the 1701-D over twenty years ago. I'll give it that in a heartbeat.

Just saw the movie again. There really are some nice beauty and pull-away shots of the new Enterprise. I still say she's a beautiful ship.

I... I think *gasp*
I think I like it...
Dare I say it...
... best of any design.

And this from an OS PURIST!!!!

The movie refit was gorgeous, the OS E was ground-breaking, but this new one... she has beguiled me with her sleek lines & blue, full nacelles...;)

:guffaw:

I had the same reaction, but the more I looked at it the more it grew on me. FAST. Reminds me of the first time I tried turnip greens when I was a kid. Didn't really like it at first bite, but something told me to keep eating.
