On thing I really like about the BLURAYs is really seeing the vibrant colors of the uniforms. I think Khan really shows them at their best, however. The coloring, I don't know if its just by chance, but I really love how the uniforms, and the lighting of them on the bridge, really comes to life in HD.

Especially coming so fast on the heels of just having seen TMP. I like TMP, and I agree with the commentators that it is the most 'epic' feeling of all the TREK movies. With that said, however, when Kirk/McCoy first walk onto the bridge of the Enterprise, right before Savik 'take's her out', you can really see how the new uniforms become part of the great visuals of that scene. Hard to put into works, but it just works.

None of the later shows, TNG-DS9, or the others, could match that great coloring scheme, nor did any of the other movies after Khan, IMO. KHAN on Bluray was a real treat to see, and the movie holds up all these years later, and cements itself, IMO, as TREK's best movie to date.

And those uniforms played a big part in it, I believe, by giving the movie a nautical feel that TMP was missing.

^ I'm a big uni buff. I love those TWOK style unis. I hate the redresses they did of them in TNG to represent historic scenes - removing the undershirt, belt, etc.

The crimson jackets are awesome. And I love how with the double breast, they can loosen up the chest flap and have the undershirt showing along with the interior of the jacket.

I like the First Contact era unis too, but they look so dark and austere compared to the TWOK units.

I hated when they removed those collars for the TNG times they used it. What was the purpose for that???

I never liked them. I always thought they made everybody look like honorary members of the RCMP Junior Officer's Club. They're just too red.

Plus the whole lack of buttons or poppers really looks kind of silly.

To show an evolution of the uniform.

I'd say the movie era uniform is my least favorite. Even for a "uniform" its flat and monolithic. Its also WAY too militaristic. And on top of all that - despite the actors saying its the most comfortable - its too bulky. Sailors and soldiers don't were full dressy jacketed uniforms at all times. Look at how minimal a sailor suit is: http://www.textually.org/textually/archives/images/set3/navy-uniform2.jpg

I like the TOS uniforms and the 3rd season TNG uniforms the best, with a grudging admiration of the DS9 uniforms despite what I think of the rest of the show...

Those TNG uniforms are far to confining for my taste, and I was in the military for a long long time. Sure, Khan's uniforms were bulky, and big, but they just look better on film than the TNG uniforms. I do like the FC era/DS9 uniforms I will admit..

I love the II-VI uniforms. I appreciate the attention to detail like the service pips and the unique rank pins. I, too, didn't like the transtion steps they took in TNG. I mean, why would they eliminate the belt? Plus, that jacket must not have felt comfortable without the turtleneck. Just leave that be. There's no harm in assuming there was a complete uniform change without transition. At least Scotty still had the turtleneck in Relics.

Well, there is another aspect to this conversation, and I totally agree with you by the way. This is a movie series; not the military. I was in the military for over 20 years. And I could rip this movie apart, as well as BSG (yep, even the new one, though it was about as real as a space show could be in terms or military bearing) but I realize these are movies first; and the military aspects are second.

The reason those uniforms looked that way in color scheme was because they were trying to bring out the surrounding bridge, and its new coloring pattern as well. So, when scene in those terms, those uniforms were perfect. I think, especially after seeing TREK II in high-def, they did a great job. When Kirk/McCoy first come on that bridge, the colors really grab you, which, more than anything, was what the director wanted. And it worked.

It's just not the same uniform without them. They really nailed it in Khan.

Why do you think, because to me it was a horrid mistake, they didn't use the collars when they showed KHAN ERA uniforms on TNG. With out the collar, the Jacket looks out of place. I think if TNG ever gets the 'hi def' face lift, they should go back an use CGI and put those collars back on!!!

The jacket without the undershirt in TNG is meant to show some development of the uniform. Whenever you see it like that, it's from a time post ST6 and pre-Farpoint, as with Jack Crusher's hologram and Yesterday's Enterprise (I think they're also missing in Tapestry). But they're present on the Bozeman in Cause and Effect. It does represent a step backwardds though, in my view.

Yeah, i can see why they did..but it just looked bad. Perhaps changing the color of look of the collar would have looked better..

I always got the feeling that, on an extended cruise, the officers might forgo the crimson jacket and just wear the turtleneck with perhaps the rank pin attached to the collar or something. They would look similar to the TOS uniforms, with just the single color.

In Tapestry they had a smaller, less prominant under shirt, but an undershirt nonetheless. In my mind, the more subtle undershirt was there during Yesterday's Enterprise, et al, but not noticable. I also rationalize that they removed the belt as an optional uniform variation. I thought it looked like crap, but it's one way of explaining it away.

Also, it was only about 3 actual officers we saw in that variation of the uniform (no belt or turtleneck.) It's reasonable to assume that it wasn't the widest worn variation used.
