Actions Figures: Should They Be Removed From Their Packages?

I go with a combination approach, but in general all my Transformers products come out since I review them for my web site:

I open up just about everything (all but one, actually, and only because he looks so much cooler in the box -- I'll snap a picture tomorrow, maybe). No plans to resell anything, so there'd really be be no point to leave them in the box.

Here are a couple of photos I took some time ago of my downstairs office where a good chunk of mine are mixed in amongst my other junk, but I have others spread out all over the house. It just wouldn't be the same if they were boxed up.

I open pretty much everything. Toys are tactile by nature. There are a few I keep in box/on card but that's really because I felt the card design was exceptional. For example, the McFarlagne MONSTERS Frankenstein playset. It was almost as much fun to look at in the package as it was to set up the diorama.

Likewise, I kept some of Playmates WildCATS figures on card. At a time when most action figures didn't come with individualized cards, these did. They featured Lee's rather striking illustrations next to the figures which were brilliantly sculpted renditions of his drawings.

Amusingly enough, in both instances, the opened counterparts to these toys haven't lasted as long. The McFarlagne MONSTERS all got brittle and broke and the Playmates WildCATS all got MEGO molt.

Just a little while ago I was looking at the McFarlane monsters Phantom of the Opera and his hero foe, which I got a few years ago at a flea market in a bag of stuff.

THere was Costner Robin Hood, too. Must be landfills of Costner Robin Hood figures out there. :p

Ha. When that movie came out, I got the Christian Slater character because he had Sgt. Slaughter on his sound mixer in Pump Up The Volume. I kept him in my car on the ashtray. Every passenger used to comment on him.

I kind of expected you to have more toys. :p
Who me? I have no idea what collection you could be talking about! I am a very modest collector after all! ;)

I collect Transformers as well (well, did... well... still do when I have some cash) and although mine is a much more modest collection - about 70 figures I think - you just have to open them! Transformers are especially enticing to open because they are almost always packaged in vehicle mode. Where's the fun in that? I am a big fan of that packaging from the Japanese reissues though, that is resealable.

Neato! I've been to your website before, only I always assumed it stood for Beast Wars Transformers.

It used to actually, but after the site expanded its focus I had to come up with something that made more sense. Glad to hear from a visitor. :)

Absolutely, and it's a fascinating contrast in how different cultures market action figures. In the US, figures are largely considered disposable items that are meant to be played with, broken and replaced. In Japan they're treated more as collector's items and given packaging that can be reused and displayed accordingly. It's rare when Japan creates packaging that gets entirely destroyed when you open the figure. In the US that's the norm.

I used to be in the Action Figure biz, but everything today is made in volume 10 times what it used to be in the early days so nothing new really is a good investment choice. In fact case in point. I had the new HE-MAN Classics put out only for mattycollector.com and although Mattel says they will NEVER be remade once they sell out, Rumer was going around that Mattel was going to release a BETTER version of the He-Man figure so when I heard that I went ahead and sold my figuers fast!

I've collected nothing since I was a kid until the last 18-24 months when I started collecting Doctor Who figures.

I open them, they go on my shelf. I do keep the packaging for certain figures. Not to resell but to repack for safety/storage when I move. Mind you, sometimes, the knife slips and your packaging isn't opened as nicely as you'd intended. My DW SDCC purchases this year went that way. One opened nicely along the seem, one... rather sloppy.

But they're for my enjoyment, not to resell so it doesn't matter much.

I think they should be open and displayed. Of the large collection I have, only a few remain in the original packages. Those are the rare ones. (Data in Red Uniform, 1701 figures etc) As a Star Trek fan from the beginning, I want o look at enjoy my figures. Not hide them away in some box.

The other month I FINALLY picked up a Star Trek Micro Machines Collectors Set III for a reasonableish price ($100) - the box is kinda worn a bit, but by no means ruined. The thing is though, I say finally, because I've been wanting this since my mum said I couldnt have it when I was 7 and I held it in my hands. Since then I've always wanted it but didnt have the money/want to spend the money on the product.

Of course, I havent opened it, but the 7 year old me has been itching to get em out and just touch the damn things ever since it arrived.

EDIT - Yikes, didnt realise it was the living dead..
