Graduate sues college because she's jobless.

AP story on MSNBC

The first three paragraphs of the story:

NEW YORK - A New York City woman who says she can't find a job is suing the college where she earned a bachelor's degree.

Trina Thompson filed a lawsuit last week against Monroe College in Bronx Supreme Court. The 27-year-old is seeking the $70,000 she spent on tuition.

Thompson says she's been unable to find gainful employment since she received her information technology degree in April.

And the blurb under the video link that's the kicker for me:

Aug. 3: An unemployed Monroe College graduate is suing her alma mater for the $70,000 she paid in tuition, claiming the school's office of career advancement has not “tried hard enough” to help her land a job.

I guess this college graduate won't be pulling herself up by the bootstraps.

She does know that you can't count on your Career Placement service 100% for the job? You still have to, or at least expect too, go out and look for yourself. And then you have to get past the interview. The Collage job placement service only helps generate leads and get interviews, it doesn't guarantee you a job.

It often doesn't even do that.

Going by my experiences and that off friends, that was the MOST they did. The average was calling up and saying "We just had a job post for <company name> and the computer says your certified/degreed/study <insert subject>, do you want to interview or not?" After about 6 months to a year, they were zero help.

Yeah. My school lost its accreditation shortly after I graduated, in part because they promised a high job placement rate but wouldn't even generate leads for recent graduates.

She paid for an education, not a job. So she got what she paid for. I don't see her winning at all, although stranger things have happened.

Err, maybe shes had her head in the books for a bit too long. In case she hasnt notice a lot of companies aren't hiring, they're laying off. Some companies are hiring, sure, but last time I checked we are still in a recession.

Her degree is in information-technology, which to start with is a flood field on the best of days, more so now. Hells, I know people that been in various tech fields for years and within the last few months to a year they've went from making $30+ an hour to making min. flipping burgers or working stocker and cashiers somewhere. The job market sucks right now, and the tech industry-- like most others-- got raped and is getting raped in this recession.

Organizing job fairs is what career placement is most useful for. Get you in a room with a bunch of employers. Actually expecting one-on-one effort from them is usually expecting too much.

hun, I graduated this year from a school that specializes in tech. Trust me, I know. Im wasn't in tech myself but when pretty much everyone else you went to school with was, it's kind of hard to get away from.

Isn't that basically exactly what she just said?

Pffft. Who listens to what HR has to way anyway? :p

received her information technology degree in April.

For any other major I'd simply dismiss her as an idiot. But this caught my eye.

Based on some of the radio ads I've heard around here, many of these "tech schools" make some pretty wild claims about how much money you WILL make and what kind of job you're GOING to get and so on and so forth. They're totally different from the ads I hear for other kinds of schools.

I have to wonder exactly what this school "promised" her when she signed up.

Could it be that she's not so crazy and will actually get them to change some of their marketing and recruitment techniques?

^ This is a real college, not some trade school or technical school that could suddenly close up shop and leave with your money.

She's also a 2.7 GPA student who believes there's a conspiracy where they help 4.0 GPA students ahead of her:

Longer article on CNN

Her court filing in .pdf format

She suggested that Monroe's Office of Career Advancement shows preferential treatment to students with excellent grades. "They favor more toward students that got a 4.0. They help them more out with the job placement," she said.

Monroe College is a fully accredited university that offers a broad variety of majors. They're hardly a "tech school".

This is what happens when you give children trophies just for showing up and you don't keep score.

But then, by suing, she actually has a case that the university did not in fact, give her proper preparation for how the world works.
