Eight Astronauts-four men and four women-prepare for a six year journey aboard the Antares.

A secret element in Storage Pod 4 affects the crew which leads to a dangerous crisis. Meanwhile, Ted's wife Eve Shaw reveals the true nature of the mission to him.

Anyone going to give this show a shot? I'm assuming since a lot of people here are calling it "Grey's Anatomy in Space," most of you won't be giving this show a second thought. Of course, if there was a show about a martian cyborg nunchaku expert with the exact same type of writing as Grey's, you'd be eating it up.

Since this show is debuting in August, I'm guessing it doesn't have a chance in hell of surviving.

So you're suggesting that what people like or dislike about Grey's has entirely to do with "the type of writing" and nothing to do with the content, as if the two are mutually exclusive?

I'm not going to bother with it this evening, because I've got other things to do. If I hear good things about it in the interim I'll pick it up later.

Early reviews, however, are not encouraging.

It isn't bad. Very slow as expected with a Gatticca feel to it. It is great to see Laura Harris in there. Paula Graces character is getting annoying with the whole camera in your face thing. Coming from the B5, the Wire route where very little is spoon fed to you. I disliked the hammering home of the baby crying and all that BS.

It is also had a bit of the Lost element with the flashback. I'll definately tune in again. Hell I sat through 12 episodes of dollhouse just for Eliza, I can watch more Gravity for Paula Garces and Laura Harris :D

I gave both hours an Above Average.

Very interesting ideas and questions are raised. What exactly is "Beta"?

See I think stuff like that is cheap writing unless there is a purpose. Like let's just put some random stuff in there and pretend it all part of the "plan". I have a bad feeling the crying baby and Beta is going to drag on for as long as this show goes on.

I think I was spoiled by B5. I remembered seeing my first shadow ship going.. WOW.. This is going to be so cool and it is going to be resolved. One can only hope the writer's of Grey's and Desperate watched a lot of Sci Fi.

The baby-wailing has got to be toned down... Along with the choices of music at some points which made me cringe and drive home the "Grey's in Space!" thoughts I had from the beginning.

That said it has potential to be good. They're going for the vaguely cerebral crowd through commentary on abortion / birth control and destiny vs determination so there's good ground there.

Re: Defying Gravity: "Pilot" & "Natural Selection" 8/2 Grading/Discuss

I enjoyed it well enough to want to keep watching. I can't wait to see what the numbers are like. It probably won't last, but then again, that's not the decision of one station alone, so who knows what'll happen.

The production values are better than the promo made them out to be, so this thing gets high grades there. The format is good too. I like that they have the action going back and forth between the ship and mission control with flashbacks thrown in. That'll help keep the show from feeling too confined and thus dull. Unfortunately it isn't handled nearly as well as it is on Lost. Also, the drama is pretty slow and most of the characters haven't gelled with me yet. There's still time for that though. A lot of my favorite shows have had characters I didn't take to right away. I give this an 'above average' grade.

Now for a few points...

- I like Ron Livingston. I like his character Maddux Donner too. Donner doesn't have any of Ron's usual dry humor this time. Intead he's got the cool, confident manly man thing going and Ron pulls it off pretty well. Besides, you can't have two last names and not be cool.

- Some other characters were good too. I liked Laura Harris as Zoe Barnes and especially Andrew Airlie as the head of mission control. He was good. The others have potential too. They all had a good start with lots of personal issues serving as good hooks.

- Looks like this show has something in common with BSG in that "fate" will play a role in the show. Did whatsherface call it "Beta"? I wonder what that's all about. Laura Harris did an interview where she didn't dismiss the possibility of an alien presence on the show.

- Speaking of Laura Harris, I liked seeing her naked.

I had to say it.

Let me explain...

There was something about a naked and vulnerable human out there in the cold vacuum of space, protected only by a layer of glass that not only made a nice visual, but made you stop and think about the whole idea just a bit.

- Looks like that scene of a naked Zoe floating out to space was a premonition that came to pass. I wonder what the others mean, especially the crying baby. It could be guilt on Zoe's part after he abortion, but it could also be something yet to come.

- I wonder where they're going with the birth control & abortion theme.

- Like I said, the show probably won't last. In a way, that's too bad. It might be nice to see what a round trip through the solar system would be like with stops at the various planets.

Oh, and what can't they be told about until they reach Venus? By the way, smart move on getting them there in just a few weeks so the audience doesn't lose too much patience.

OMG the music needs to go. I feel like I'm watching some cheesy MTV reality show. Not some sort of cerebral Space Opera.

Anybody else trying to nit pick the science. The hair is one thing. If the clothes are electro magnetic, what about the hair. Shouldn't the hair stand up??

And what about food. Did they have enough food for 6 years? Also FTL communications. How did they figure that out?

Also anybody here an astronomer. Did the path they take make the most sense? I remember in High school Physics the teacher said that space travel will be using a lot of the gravitational force to "fling" space ships from one planet to another.

Also is six years enough time to cover the solar system?

I wonder how similar this new show it to that other FOX show Virtuality that didn't make it to series?

Re: Defying Gravity: "Pilot" & "Natural Selection" 8/2 Grading/Discuss

Velocity of the ship suggests a high speed reaction drive..probably nuclear, hence the huge hulkin shield in the front..The "electrostatic" clothes are a nice dodge around the "Gravity Field" cliche at least they tried to keep the science hard..

The Lost touches and the mysterious "It" "Beta" or whatever is a good hook as well.. Characterization is decent..and appears to be developing well..the flashbacks are a bit confusing sometimes, and the music needs to be a bit better.

(Personally I think "Beta" is an overgrown sentient sex toy that got out of control, but I'm rather warped in that area)

You know, while watching the first hour I realized that the TV ratings logo acts as something of a spoiler. Since there was no D, I knew AJ wasn't going to die.

Re: Defying Gravity: "Pilot" & "Natural Selection" 8/2 Grading/Discuss

Your groin is warped? Bent or kinked? More of a uturn or a wrinkle?

This sounds like virtuality.

how can they both be made and both be cancelled unless there's a third project out there with is also exactly the same but tapped to go on to the next level?

Re: Defying Gravity: "Pilot" & "Natural Selection" 8/2 Grading/Discuss

It didn't knock my socks off, but I'd been prepared for it to be truly awful so I was pleasantly surprised. And I love Ron Livingston and Laura Harris.

I'll tune in again next week.

ETA: I forgot, it's good to see Andrew Airlie got a post Reaper job, and Captain Kelly in the house!

? I don't think we have that around here.

Re: Defying Gravity: "Pilot" & "Natural Selection" 8/2 Grading/Discuss

I know that they're teasing the secret because that's what they need to do to keep the show "interesting", but I could have done with fewer references to "it".

But, eh, I wasn't expecting much and in turn I got what I expected. But hey, at least it's a 13 episode series and not some 5 season mess.

Re: Defying Gravity: "Pilot" & "Natural Selection" 8/2 Grading/Discuss

I liked it. I've never seen Grey's Anatomy or Lost (or, in fact, a lot of what's on TV these days) so for myself this is largely standing on its own--and I think these first two episodes did well enough as an introduction. It has potential to be really cool...but it also has potential to be humdrum. Hope it'll survive 13 episodes.

I'm convinced that networks encourage writers of this kind of thing to assume that the viewers are doing two other things while half-watching the show. They may even be right.

Re: Defying Gravity: "Pilot" & "Natural Selection" 8/2 Grading/Discuss

Ah, Cliff's Notes for a show while the show itself is airing?

It's the ratings logo that appears in the upper corner, i.e. TV MA is mature audiences. And then below that they have S for sex, V for violence, D for death, etc. For both episodes, the only letter was S.
