Actions Figures: Should They Be Removed From Their Packages?

I collect action figures for fun, not business. So I do remove them from their packages. They look nicer on my shelves than in a box in some uncharted part of my closet.

I'd like to think I'm not obsessive though, I dont like buying every last figure from any given toyline. I usually get one of each character and end it there.

Do whatever you want to do with them. I'd recommend collecting action figures as hobby for any man who wants to be less appealling to women.

I'm quite sure that'd have the opposite effect on me. :p

I always remove the figures from the packages, including those rare ones--like from the recent San Diego Comic Con--that are actually quite expensive. I admit that I don't really play with them that much, but I do like putting figures on display or in action poses/sequences now and then.

I have several anime action figures that have packaging designed where you can take the figure out and then put it back in exactly as it was originally (best of both worlds, I guess)...

That, and I can't see the included pic...I'm getting the red X box.

I take them out and put them on a shelf, then again I only have 4 or 5 and they're pretty much just statues.

DURT DA DUR. IT'S AN IMAGE OFF THE INTERNET. YOU DON'T HAVE TO OWN SOMETHING TO HAVE A PICTURE OF IT. YOU PEOPLE ARE ADULTS AND YOU COLLECT ACTION FIGURES? WTF?

I'M BEGINNING TO THINK I'M THE ONLY ONE HERE WHO HAS AN ACTIVE SEX LIFE. HELL I'M PROBABLY THE ONLY MAN HERE WHO'S BEEN WITH A WOMAN.

GO. PLAY WITH YOUR TOYS. HAVE ALL THE FUN YOU WANT. MAKE LITTLE POW POW NOISES AND PRETEND THEY'RE REAL.

I am female, and I'd have no problem with a guy who collects action figures, as I do myself. Well, kinda... I'm more of the kind who will get all the figures of a specific favorite character and that'll be about it. For instance, I have Star Wars figures I'm not even sure why I got them (young Anakin, for example), but the vast majority of my collection is all of Queen Amidala, because I'm in love with her costume designs.

For Pirates of the Caribbean, the majority of my figures/dolls are Jack Sparrow. Not a lot of other characters (in fact, I think the only other character I have is Elizabeth...).

I'm a very visual person; I require a lot of visual stimulation, so having a lot of figures and dolls to display makes me feel more comfortable in my environment. Especially now that I'm living on my own, it makes my place feel more homey, having things to look at.

So, I don't know why people have this thing against people who collect figures/dolls.... Everyone does it for a different reason. And way back, I can understand why people saved stuff to sell later. I've got a couple Star Wars stuff from '77 that I've kept, hoping it'd be worth something someday, but so far, their worth isn't enough to try to sell them yet. When they're 50 years old, then MAYBE it might be worth something...

Joy

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or just being a troll. Either way, this is clearly not a thread for you. Please let us discuss this without your unnecessary bashing. Thank you.

This is God speaking. Warning for trolling. Knock it off.

Nice collection, cc. Very cute. I was never a G.I. Joe fan, but that collection just shows what great variety there is in the looks of those characters. I think it would have been cool if the new G.I. Joe movie had played off that more instead of just giving them generic black outfits like the X-Men in their movies. I know some of the costumes are too garish to be directly translated to film (and that's what made Cyclops' "yellow spandex" line appropriate), but a little bit more colour on their outfits wouldn't have hurt.

I say take them out.

It's one of those things where if you're relying on some toys to help pay your kids way through college in the future then you may have done something wrong somewhere else.

Agreed, they are toys and they are meant to be played with!

^ I agree. I open all my toys! Actually I have most of the new Star Trek figures sitting on my desk at work, which I play with while I talk on the phone. The Transformers I also have there get a workout once in a while too. But Mr. Potato Head is played with by almost everyone so he gets "Most Popular".

But I am one of those that buy them because I want them. I have no interest in them as an investment. If I did I wouldn't keep wearing my Medical Tricorder around the house and using my Smurf figurines to make the girls in the office giggle.

Oh and captcalhoun I am jealous as all hell right now. I owned almost every single one of those GI Joe figures when I was a kid. Destro was a favorite! I even had the color changing Zartan. It brings back so many memories to look at your pics. It is a shame my MOTHER TOSSED THEM OUT. It still hurts to think about it. :(

I say, if it's a collection/you're planning to sell them in a few years for more than they were originally, keep them in the package, or at the very least keep the packaging as intact as possible so they can be put back in later.

What do you guys think about the idea that action figures should not be taken out of the package in order to preserve them because there are a limited number of them in existence and there will probably never be any more figures of that character? I just searched for Underworld action figures on eBay. There is only one each of Michael and Raze, and none at all of Selene. Could it be because there weren't that many to start with and nearly everyone opened theirs?

Well, they probably opened them so they could play with them! They're not called action figures for nothing, ya know!

More likely that there just weren't that many to start with. In the U.S. market, female action figures are generally produced in considerably smaller numbers than male action action figures. There are exceptions, of course--Hasbro and Playmates aren't quite as squeamish about it--but other toy companies will deliberately shortpack female figures in cases bound for the U.S., but will stock more of them in cases headed overseas...

Those that did snatch up a Selene figure either took played with them or are keeping them in their packages in the hope that they'll increase in value enough so they can quit their jobs one day...

But some consider the packaging to be just as important as the action figure inside it and are simply serious collectors, IMO. They have a ton of unopened toys but with no intention of selling them later whatsoever.

I remove all my anime/manga figures/statuettes (no action figures for me) from their packages. They are much nicer to look at that way.
