Teams You Love to Hate

As for the title "America's Team", many Cowboys fans hate it, and it just one more thing to add to why people hate the team. I say let someone else have it. It's nothing but trouble.

Why are they called "America's Team" The Niners also won 5 super bowls, and the Steelers have 6 now. It's kind of like calling Detroit Hockeytown. What gave them the right to say they were Hockeytown. I think the Canadian team fans (Calgery and Montreal for example) would beg to differ.

Detroit is Hockeytown only because the Red Wings decided they wanted it to be Hockeytown. I don't like the label, myself... the real hockeytowns are any of the small cities across Canada that eat and breath junior hockey.

Although, I freely admit that I would probably not have the guts to walk into Fenway Park wearing Yankee gear. (In any case, I wouldn't do that unless the Sox were *playing* the Yankees.) If I did, I'd better be ready to get my ass kicked - although I hope not literally  .

I did wear a Tampa Bay Rays AL Champs shirt to the office a couple days after the ALCS.

Yeah, but that's different, innit? Wearing any kind of gear to an *office* isn't anywhere near the kind of risk I would run wearing Yankee gear into Fenway. I mean, at the office, all you've got is your coworkers, who obviously aren't gonna start some shit. But if I got anything Yankee-related on, and I go into Fenway, who's to say what would happen?

Add half the towns in Northern Minnesota--where they've been playing hockey just as long (if not longer) than any place in Canada.

New York Yankees

College Football
The entire Big 10 (11) (especially the Buckeyes for being ridiculously overrated and pumped up by the media every year)
Notre Dame
Florida Gators
Tennessee Volunteers
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Baltimore Ravens

Boston Celtics
Detroit Pistons

College basketball
Duke (watch ANY and I do mean ANY college basketball game this year where Dick Vitale is broadcasting regardless of the two teams playing and he will bring up his mancrush on Duke, Coach K, Cameroon Indoor, etc.)

The Olympique de Marseille and the Italian football team :scream:

Now THIS is what I call interesting. All the usual hates ... same old, same old. I'm much more interested in hearing about where the blood really flows. Seriously, I'd like to hear how the rivalries and such developed in the various sports in Europe and elsewhere.

You could write books about that, seriously. ;)

I did North American teams in my first post, I'll post a couple of European football teams in this one. ;)

Chelsea (sorry Garak), mostly because of Abramovich
Bayern Munich
Juventus
Inter Milan
Real Madrid

A book the size of a phone book

In France when it comes to football you can support the team you want but the real true question will always be : Paris or marseille ?
The rivalry between the 2 teams is very passionate (the video gives an idea ;) and an idea how colorful the French language is, especially in the comments) and sometimes too passionate (supporters can become very violent :wtf: ).

Italy is another problem : I hate losing a world cup againt them  (but I like winning an Euro against them ;) )

Very true, I wouldn't care much if any of them dubbed themselves "Hockeytown". However... ;)

The phrase is copyrighted by the Red Wings, so I pity any poor small town that tries to usurp it. Pittsburgh tried to make the name part of the terms of a bet between the cities' Mayors, but failed for that reason. (That was last season, so it wouldn't have ended up mattering unless they had made the same bet this year.)

BTW, this thread has inspired me to ask a side question.

How many here are proud to be hated? For example, I look at all the hate for the Flyers and it feels awesome. If the Flyers were loved by everyone, they would be doing something wrong.

Well Minnesota does have "The State of Hockey." Which, to anyone who's seen the state high school tournament, would probably aknowledge as true.

Since they've started playing the tournment in the Xcel Center, there have been scapers selling tickes to the big AA championship games in the hundreds of dollars ... For a high school game.

Heck, the games got so big, the had Cosell do the games in the 70s, and Michaels did it a couple of years in the 80s.

I don't know if "proud" is the right word exactly, but I do enjoy people's hatred of the Lakers.

I'm definitely not proud that people hate the Yankees, nor do I enjoy it. I still don't understand why they do, really. What, did the Yankees piss in a lot of people's cornflakes or something? What did they do to *earn* that hatred? Win too many World Series?
