Would you buy an HDTV with a big scratch just because it's cheap?

I was at Best Buy today and there was this couple looking very carefully at an average-sized LCD HDTV. I didn't even need to read the price tag that listed the store display item for super cheap because there was a big scratch on it -- the scratch was the first thing about the TV I noticed. Then I saw that it was a massively reduced-price store display item.

I guess depending on how far away you're sitting and what's showing on the TV, you can't see it. But it would get pretty annoying to be watching and having a big huge slash down the side appearing and disappearing because of all the scene changes? I don't even think it was a major brand TV either.

Is dealing with that really worth saving $500?

Assuming the scratch is on the display and not just on the frame: no, I wouldn't buy it.
I'm quite anal about things like that, can't stand it when there's a smudge or something on my computer monitor either.

Uh no. Don't buy TVs that often and when I do I make sure to get one in great condition.

If the scratch is on the screen itself: no, definitely not. However, if the casing would be scratched, I wouldn't mind, though I'd definitely want a realistic discount. It would get scratched eventually anyway. :D

^What he said.. its ok if the casing is not perfect, but the screen must be in good condition.

No, it's not fixable.

I have partaken in open box purchases from Best Buy before though... got a good deal ona Pioneer Blu-ray player a couple weeks ago.

I'd buy it for ~$50. Not worth anything more than that.
I could use it as a big ass computer monitor, displaying whatever I feel like.
Must confess, I'd also be curious to see what's inside, so I'd open it up and tinker with it.

Ditto. I always try to buy open box to save a buck when practical.

Where is the scratch? Wouldn't a massive gash across the screen negate the entire reason one would get an HDTV?

If it's on the frame, there are ways to hide it.

I agree with this as well. I went to one viewing of Star trek at one of my local theatres and they had a situation like this on their screen. It was on the side, but it was annoying as hell and I was constantly aware of the situation.
I kind of like the idea of using it as a monitor, I don't think it was bug me so much for that use.
I think they should practically be giving this thing away. Maybe then it could be used in a spare room or something.

No, I wouldn't buy a stratched one at a Best Buy. But from a friend when the stratch is situtted close to the edge, not across the screen, I might be okay with it. But there is no way I'd buy one from a Best Buy. I expect it as good as new from there.

Nope.

I can hardly stand the one tiny dead pixel I have on my monitor, I think a gash on my TV would drive me insane. As such, no, I wouldn't buy it ;)

Lemme guess, a screensaver with pictures of them fightin' planes instead of smoking hot girls :p
