Who owns your photos once they're online?

Another famous TBBSer among us! :p

Similar thing happened to my cousin on Facebook - this person went much further though, and actually stole her identity, creating a new account, with all of her pictures directly lifted from her page, masquerading as her essentially! She alerted Facebook, and they cleared it up, thankfully. A lot of sickos out there.

Holdfast, You should not alert them to the fact they are using your picture and instead go see a solicitor and see if you can sue them for some money.

I know I would.

It crossed my mind, but frankly I doubt I'd get much beyond an apology, a removal of my picture, legal fees, and maybe a hundred bucks or so as compensation. Hardly worth the hassle.

It just made me realise that I have no idea what the law actually says about this.
Exactly. If you do not wish the picture to be used in such a way, your best bet is to ask the webmaster politely to take it down, but it sounds like your ego has been stroked too much. ;)

I would agree with the others that you still technically own the picture, but proving so in a court of law would be challenging, if it were to come to that.

In today's Internet climate, once it's on the net, it belongs to everyone.

Just like the common perception about pirated media files.

Nope. Most of my personal pictures are embedded with data by myself should someone ever steal them. If I don't care, though, I don't bother. But very personal pictures that I put up (which is rare), are embedded with data so I can verify them later.
