women and videogames

Alyx Vance in HL2. Probably the best female video game character, largely for the fact that she's not a walking parody of a 15 year old male's fantasty perception of what a woman is.

In reality, the complete opposite of what you just said.

I am curious, why do you dislike the character of Alyx? You're quite literally the first person I've encountered who doesn't consider her a strong character. I mean, she's presented as Gordon's equal in many ways (including bailing Gordon out on a few occasions), she can stand up for herself, and she's *gasp* actually dressed practically.

She never seemed to have much a role in Half Life 2. I mean, sure she bailed you out a few times, but she wasn't developed enough as a character. And it seemed like the folks at Valve always had fun with her seductively winking at you and swaying her hips. Couple that with her being only one of two females in the game (the other being an evil bitch lady) and you still have a woman who exists to be looked at. I know some disagree, but all of my friends have commented similarly.

^You clearly haven't played Episode One or listened to the commentary nodes. Valve spent a lot of time making Alyx feel like a second player and finding ways in which she and Gordon could work as a team. The Episodes are where Alyx is fleshed out as a character. From scenes where she is terrified of the Stalkers to scenes where she makes bad jokes and sneaks up behind Gordon in the dark making Zombie noises.

This work, like so much else in the Half-Life episodes made Left 4 Dead possible too.

As for her being "seductive", she goes all shy and gets embarrassed when her father tries to pair her off with Gordon.

Valve probably realized its mistake and corrected it. Good for them.
