Iron Man 2 News from Comic-Con

First, Favreau on how he plans to make the sequel bigger and better.

"Let me start by saying that everything did start here two years ago, and from the standpoint of marketing, everybody knows about our movie, but what we wanted to do was make sure that we hustled and got something together as a thank you to all of you and you're the people we wanted to show this stuff to first, so thank you so much for all your support. We just wrapped production literally last week. We had a few days off and came out here and scrambled to get this stuff over here and the people at ILM and Double Negative really pulled it off to put this together with the FX."

"As far as how we outdo it. We wanted to add characters, but not too many. We wanted to maintain the same tone and dynamic between the characters that you love while adding people that would further move us towards the eventual 'Avengers' film."

Downey on what's it like playing Tony Stark a second time around:

"I never had it so good. It's such a great role and it was born out of this opportunity that Feige and Favreau gave me a couple years back. As we move forward, I'm just thrilled to be sitting next to the likes of the talent to my left and if anything, the fact that we nailed it the first time, it really proved to us that other people were interested in coming on board, so that's the real win for me is these folks."

Cheadle on joining the franchise for the second movie:

"It's been a very interesting experience. I've never worked on a movie with this kind of scope and these kinds of FX and I didn't really know what to expect, so I really heavily relied on Robert and Kevin and Jon to help me figure out the right tone and how to play this guy. I was very nervous for the whole shoot, but they gave me really good guidance." He called wearing the War Machine outfit "heaven." (Downey joked that he couldn't believe Cheadle's rig is cooler than his rig, to which Cheadle joked back that it was "a contractual thing.")

Loads of new footage description and also an interview with the director Favreau. It seems like there is going to be more Nick Fury and there will be tensions between the goverment and Stark. Looks great.

Tensions with the Government? If that goes right it could lead to Senator Boynton and Armor Wars.

My favorite scenes from today's event:

Garry Shandling as Sen. Stern, who demands that Stark turn over the new weapon (meaning the armor). Tony refuses, of course, pissing off the Senator.

Nick Fury meets Stark inside a donut shop. Stark says he's not interested in being part of Fury's "boy band." Something tells me that Fury won't be taking no for an answer.

Black Widow is seen briefly, kicking ass.

War Machine in action! Lotsa guns on that dude.

Mickey Rourke, looking fearsome with energy whips.

So when they said "first" armor that becomes War Machine are they referring to the Mark 1 or the Mark 2 - the silver suit or the "built from a box of scraps!" suit?

Mark II, I guess. It appeared to me that Rhodey's suit was silvery in color, just before it was augmented with all kinds of guns.

Stark is rejecting Fury's offer about joining the "team"? Then why did he try to inform or recruit Thunderbolt Ross in The Incredible Hulk, unless that scene somehow plays after Stark accepts Fury's offer?

In The Incredible Hulk, I thought Stark wanted to tell Gen. Ross that Iron Man would neutralize the Hulk, given that the Army was unable to complete the job. The scene doesn't really suggest that Stark was OK with the idea of joining some "team" formed by Nick Fury.

Stark specifically said "I'm putting a team together", or "We're putting a team together". Which to me seemed to suggest the Avengers Initiative, but I could be wrong.

EDIT: The actual lines are:

Stark: "What if I told you we're putting a team together".

Thunderbolt Ross: "We?"

So Stark DOES specifically mention putting some form of team together. The scene is on YouTube.

I didn't remember Stark's words. You're right--Stark does seem to be talking about the Initiative. But I still don't know why he's telling Ross about it. Why would Ross need to know?

The Stark/Ross scene is premature. In Iron Man 2 (at least part of the film), Tony's still not interested in the "team" gig.

Maybe Iron Man 2 is before Incredible Hulk; There'll be some bit where Tony comes around and Fury asks him to go the NYC after getting a report of a "pair of brawlers" there to ask for Ross' assist.

In the Ultimate Comics Ross was a part of SHIELD so maybe that's the direction they'll go for here since he's already in charge of a unit devoted to hunting down a Bioforce experiment.

It's possible that the conversation with General Ross happens after Iron Man 2, because IIRC doesn't Ross say to Tony that he's been creating a lot of ruckus lately? That could be of course referring to the events of the first movie but then as Dan pointed out and I just watched the movie scene again that Stark does say "we're putting together a team". I'm inclined that this conversation takes place after Iron Man 2. Also as Anwar points out, in Ultimates Ross is indeed a member of SHEILD but Ross in IC appears to not know who Stark is referring to when he says "We". Damn though I'm getting excited about Iron Man 2, seeing War Machine should be awesome, same with Black Widow, Justin Hammer I'm excited about, along with Whiplash. I wish we would adreess the Mandarian though.

The panel entertained questions from the audience, but no one asked about the Mandarin. One assumes that Favreau wants to build up to that confrontation. We might have to wait for Iron Man 3.

Incidentally, Marvel and Comic-Con gave away an official poster, showing the Mark I, II, III and IV suits. The Mark III is shown all banged up (after events in the first movie of course). The Mark IV is nearly identical to the Mark III. Fans might enjoy studying the differences between the III and IV. Maybe the image will appear online somewhere soon.

Except Ross was using SHEILD to track Banner in The Incredible Hulk. So he would kind of have to know who SHEILD is.

I wish we would adreess the Mandarian though.

I was really expecting them to use the Mandrian for Iron Man 2 and was disappointed when they didn't. I guess they are saving Iron Man's most famous villain for the next movie. They better have him in that!

He was using SHIELD and Stark Industries to battle Banner, but he likely didn't know about the Avengers Initiative.

I feel they missed an opportunity in Incredible Hulk by not making Blonsky a HYDRA double agent (instead of KGB) who feels under-appreciated due to his aging state. So he plays this up to get Ross to inject him with the Super-Soldier serum thus becoming powerful and having a valuable commodity to bring back to HYDRA. Then he goes and becomes Abomination which puts a spanner in HYDRA's plans.

You sure about that? could he have brought back the mark 1 from section 16?

Unless the whole place was totally leveled and IronMonger's right arm really did destroy the mark while going after Pepper
