What's the last good song you discovered?

Well, as I'm always in for new artists and songs, I thought I'd start a thread about the subject.

What was the last song you've discovered that's quite good? And why is it so good? Post a sample or youtube link if you can, so we can taste the music, as well. The only prerequisite is that it isn't a song that's played continuously on the radio; the idea is to discover new music, after all.

The last song I discovered was "Evolution" by "The Cinematic Orchestra". It has a lovely relaxed jazzy beat. Love it.

Sample (700Kb, < 30sec)

What's your latest great discovery?

As of earlier this week, Mark Lanegan's "Hit The City."

I can't believe it took me this long to find this guy. I knew his work from the soundtrack to "I'm Not There."

I'm a huge Lanegan and Screaming Trees fan, I follow everything he does, which is a huge amount of music. If you haven't found it yet get Saturnalia by the Gutter Twins, it's his album with a guy called Greg Dulli from Afghan Whigs and Twilight Singers, absolutely brilliant.

For my part the last great song I discovered is the new track by Alice In Chains called "A Looking in View". I think it qualifies as they have to make a new name for themselves after such a long break. You can hear it here www.aliceinchains.com

Video is NSFW.

I don't know, maybe "Goodnight, Travel Well" by The Killers. It defies description and I like it when rock is mixed with orchestral music. Part of it also sounds like something out of the James Bond movie You Only Live Twice, the part when we first see the space capsule being swallowed by the other one.

The song "American Saturday Night" by Brad Paisley is the best of the new songs I've heard recently. It's got some clever lyrics, an upbeat tone, and some of the best guitar playing I've heard.

The Cinematic Orchestra and Mark Lanegan are both excellent - I was late to the party on both of them myself but now Lanegan's Field Songs and Bubblegum are two of my favourite albums.

In the last week I've discovered the astounding solo album from Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson and the newest album from Therapy?. Never given Therapy? much of a thought before due to their usual punkiness, but their 2009 album Crooked Timber is a cracking mix of rock, metal and progressive. I'd put both those albums on my top 10 list for 2009.

Also found a few Thrice songs on albums I've owned for months but sort of skipped over before.

And obviously there's the new Muse single, United States of Eurasia. Sure it's really Queen-esque and I HATE Queen, but damn if it's not infectious enough to get me hooked. The Alice in Chains new material is unexpectedly high quality too. Basically I never stop finding more music to love.

I can't stop listening to Copeland. I listen to Good Morning Fire Eater at least twice a day. So good. It's so mellow and meditative and then it rocks out but manages to still be chill while I'm rocking out. Neat video too.

Agreed. Of course, for the most part the whole album is very good, especially "Welcome to the Future" and "Catch all the Fish"

It's difficult for me to discover a really good song, or something I consider noteworthy. The last time I did was when I listened to a sample of Andrew Bird's "Oh No", and immediately purchased it, and the whole album, via iTunes. I was not disappointed.

Youtube Audio of "Oh No"

Excellent.

Got introduced to "The Cinematic Orchestra" at the start of last year when Schweppes used "To Build a Home" in a fantastic TV advert.

Saw the video clip to Lisa Mitchell's "Coin Laundry" last night. Digging the vibe of the song.

It's a good song, but I think it's one of the weakest lead singles they have gone with from an album due to the fact that it entirely crosses the line from tribute to one of Bellamy's favourite bands to outright copying them. Beside the obivous bombastic flourishes and soaring chorus which emulate Queen on every level, the use of stereotypical eastern scales made me think a lot of a track called Mustapha by Queen, I think Mercury liked to mock his roots somewhat, he certainly never tried to acknowledge them in any meaningful way. Not that I think Muse are mocking their subject matter here.

I was quite surprised actually, it's not as innovative as I have come to expect from them.
