That's not how McCoy got his nickname!

Emily Deschanel's Bones is called that because she's based on a forensic anthropoligist Kathy Reichs, who studies skeletal reconstruction in crime solving. A forensic anthropologist is not a surgeon and therefore not a "sawbones"

Do you think Emily Deschanl needs any more Bones to study....I have one I can give her.......:shifty:

Me too, but she'd have to call her sister in for a consult.

At first it bothered me too, but i got over it. And now i kinda like the meaning behind it.

I laughed and I accepted it then and there.

Because in Main Trek he's a Sawbones, in Nutrek he's a SORE bones cause he's wife took everything else.
:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

What?

The most important thing they did right concerning this reference in Star Trek is that no one then stops to draw the connection with a lame line of dialogue - not even Kirk repeating back, "Well, 'Bones...'"

One of the stupidest lines on Star Trek: Enterprise (insert your smart-aleck remarks here) was Arik Soong's little epiphany about changing his focus to artificial intelligence including "it'll take more than my life-time" or some such nonsense. Yeah, draw us dimwits a picture why doncha.

Y'all are welcome to Emily; Zoe is mine.

Any of you guys ever been to college? Every nickname from every one of my friends is the result of single off-the-cuff remarks, isolated instances, minor and forgettable accidents, etc. That's how people get nicknames. It's not at all unreasonable to assume that his nickname for the rest of his life came from a single sentence. I still have a nickname that my friends call me that stems from exactly that, one sentence I said offhandedly years ago.

Very true. I've certainly seen nicknames develop that way.

I agree with what Dennis said about "The Augments". I think what Soong actually stated was, "I doubt I'll finish the work myself. It might take a generation or two." I liked the Augments arc, but that line was definitely laying it on a little thick.

The use of "Bones" in the film, however, was appropriately subtle, based on an off-the-cuff remark that doesn't draw attention to itself. I liked that. It was assumed that Trek fans would be able to pick up on the reference themselves, and clearly they did.

Yes, I agree. Maybe they can consult with each other....Then They can take turns consulting with me......:p

Easiest explanation....

His nickname was Bones, probably due to being a military doctor. He thought it would be clever to say "all I got left is my bones" as that's his nickname.

Same as if his nickname was Fatass, he might say "all I got left is my fat ass"

Easiest explanation is J.J's trrek is for viewers in the 21st century and not the 60's so he thought a different idea for the nickname was a good idea since we never actually got a strict on screen explnation anyway. Personally I loved the line about his Bones.

Probably mentioned before (don't want to read 9 pages), but the writers thought that since alternate Kirk would't be as well versed as the real one, he wouldn't know the bonesawer thing, so they thought of a new reason for him to call McCoy bones.

Exactly! It's as simple as that.

Yeah the "sawbones" term is archaic even today; the idea that this Kirk (or even the original one) would just casually refer to it in the distant 23rd century seems pretty farfetched to me.

Frankly, as a kid, I just assumed the "Bones" thing came because, well, he was a DOCTOR! And that's one of the things doctors regularly deal with. :D

"Bones" was simply an alternative Kirk used instead of calling him "Doc".
