How do you remove a program that can't be removed from the uninstall -

Basically my anti-virus software (Symantic Endpoint) somehow got corrupted and refuses to repair or uninstall itself from my computer. And it's pretty bloody annoying. So how do you get rid of it?

If it's really fucked up, usually that means there's a registry error someplace.

I've had to something similar in the past. I don't remember what I did, I just remember it was frustrating and time consuming.

It's BS like that, that equals a +1 for Linux.

You could try to reinstall it first. Usually, this "repairs" the install, enabling it to be uninstalled after a reboot.

A manual removal from the Windows registry is also possible (including the deleting of any files associated with that program), but it requires you to have intimate knowledge about the registry; otherwist, it can go very wrong, very quickly.

Drag it to the trash.

Oh wait, this isn't OSX.

Hmm.

The popular beilief is that dragging an application to the Trash will remove all traces of a program from the computer, but frequently it does not and many files and folders can be left behind. This can happen even after using an application's uninstall utility - if it came with one - and you might think that this is simply bad programming, after all, why can't a program remove the files it uses? However, there are several reasons why Trashing an application or uninstalling it might not do the job as thoroughly as you would expect.

One reason is that programs can install files to other locations and not all of them are stored with the program in the app folder. For example, it is common for programs to provide customisation options, such as preferences and options, skins, add-ons and plug-ins. These are be stored in various files and folders on the hard disk drive and because they are not part of the original application, they are not removed when you drag an application icon to the Trash folder.

A program may also cache information, which means that it stores information on the hard disk drive so that it can be accessed more easily the next time it is required. A typical example is a web browser and dragging the application icon to the Trash will not remove the cache files because they are stored somewhere else on the hard disk drive. Hundreds of megabytes of files could be left behind!

Have you tried uninstalling it from Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs?

That has worked for me where using the program's own uninstall hasn't.

I'm aware of all the prefs files and whatnot. Claims of "hundreds of megabytes" aside, you typically aren't going to lose any significant amount of hard drive space to that stuff. It certainly won't cause the OS any problems in almost all cases.

And there are still a few programs which install themselves scattershot rather than going for the recommended "package" model.

If that's the sort of thing you're worried about, though, you can always clean up with a freeware tool like CacheOut X which finds files of that sort which haven't been touched in months and offers to let you delete them. I wouldn't worry about that unless I was counting the kilobytes remaining on my drive though.

How to manually uninstall Symantec Endpoint Protection client from Windows 2000, XP and 2003, 32-bit Editions (there's a link there for Vista32 too)

It is however quite a bit of work, but I'd say it's a possible last resort.

Wow, they know their program has problems being uninstalled and rather than fix it or provide a program that automates all of that on the website, they expect their paying customers to go through all that.

Re: How do you remove a program that can't be removed from the uninsta

The best approach would be to re-install the program and then remove it altogether.
Symantec software usually has a tendency of being a sausage of a program.
Which is why I always remove it and use other solutions that are far better (in my personal experience) and are not as annoying.

That works sometimes. Other times you end up removing a duplicate of the program you just re-installed. I'm talking to you, Diablo II...

If you're having registry trouble, sometimes CCleaner does a decent job.

Try "Appremover" from http://www.appremover.com/

It's a software that tries to completely remove all traces of security software so you can reinstall them again.

Worked for me when Comodo crapped up
