Would you pay?

A friend of mine who works at the local Fox channel, she produces the local news, told me that Fox is thinking about offering a channel that will show their TV programs, and local news, minus the commercials. Both the broadcast version (what they do now) and the premium service would be offered, but the non-commercial version would be $10 a month something like that.

She sounded really cheery about it, but then I thought, why pay? Isnt that why some of us have DVRS? To zip through the commercials? The only way I see that working?

I get cable via Time-Warner. Time-Warner provideds me with my DVR right? Well, if Time-Warner provides me with my DVR AND also were to own a couple TV networks, why would they want to sell me a DVR to block out their adds which leads to lower add revenue?

Would you pay for ABC-NBC-CBS-FOX if it meant no more adds? And if so how much? Me? I wouldn't pay.

I watch about an hour of network TV a week these days, if that much.

So true...I actually think I watch more NETWORK TV in the summer; We didn't watch ONE thing on TV this weekend. We streamed in The Mummy/Mummy 2 via X360. And my son watched three ERNEST movies via Netflix streaming. We did watch wipeout, So I take that back..so one hour of NET TV...

I DVR everything I want to watch-and I couldn't tell you what channel they are on. I type in the name and hit "Series Record" and I'm done. So, no, no $ for commercial free network shows.

What are they gong to fill the almost 9 hours per day that make up commercials with? And that's assuming the network broadcasts the whole day, which it doesn't. Afternoons and late nights are typically filled with local programming.

I don't know.

I don't watch enough program television to really justify it. If I could get the news and sporting events, then maybe.

Yeah..I asked her that. She didn't know. But I bet they would fill it up with endless promos for the shows. If they were smart, they would show cartoons!!!

$10 a month for a single channel that is still aired on TV? Uh, not a chance. I would pay $10 for Hulu which is offered whenever you want it and offers shows and movies from several channels and companies. $10 for FOX is a ripoff.

I already pay for TV (grossly overpriced Comcast) and I already avoid commercials (VCR it all & zap). That system works for me. Why pay for no commercials when I don't watch em now?

And no, I'm not switching to DVR because sooner or later the networks will smarten up and contract with the DVR providers to block ad zapping. Can't do that with my un-networked VCR. Admiral Adama taught me that! :bolian:

Hell no.

I don't mind commercials because it gives me time to go pee or grab something to eat/drink, go make a phone call, see upcoming movies or games. I NEED commercials.

Plus, I can just ff past them anyways.

This.

Plus, the shows are still going to be the same shows, with the same actual duration - except now they're all out of sync with the clock. If I want to watch one of their programs at 8, and another network's program at 9, I'm still going to have to kill 15-19 minutes somehow. It may as well be spent partially paying attention to a teenage boy trying to seduce Catherine Zeta Jones :bolian: in a T-Mobile ad while I post on TrekBBS.

IMHO, people bitch too much about ads. They help pay for the shows we like, and like it or not, the better ads are part of the fabric of American culture. "Where's the beef?", the Energizer Bunny, "Sometimes you feel like a nut...", "I'm a Toys R Us kid", "The other white meat" - they're almost like "Darmok and Jilahd at Tenagra" for us. And I, for one, am okay with that. We need something that binds us all together. We have different politics, different religions, many different subcultures - but wouldn't you like to be a Pepper, too? ;)

I don't mind ads, but when they take up nearly 40% of a TV show that's simply too much. An hour (44 minute) show has 16 minutes of commercials. That's ridiculous. Hulu uses a single 20-30 second commercial per break. An hour show works out to less than 2 minutes of commercials. Much more reasonable.
