Kirk & the Orion cadet- was it appropriate? Indecent? Cool?

Never for such riduiculously low stakes. It's one thing when the girl you're using is also your explicit adversary (Deela, Kelinda) or the problem you're trying to resolve is the possibly un-punished murder of several family members and the possible murders of the sole remaing eyewitnesses(Lenore), another thing when--what, exactly, was Kirk's big motive here? To "pass" a test that's not designed to be passed? Again, douchebaggery, plain and simple.

EDIT: It's almost as if [SPOILER ALERT! ;)] you were to compare the shooting of Old Yeller to the actions of Michael Vick.

However would that scene in a screen capture be suitable for use as an avatar for here on the Trek BBS?

That would depend on the actual still chosen. I think the usual advice is, make your avatar and then, if you're worried, send it to a mod to ask their opinion.
Oh, I'm not thinking about making an avatar myself, I was just wondering if it would be a suitable standard to compare in-movie action against.

If a particular scene from a Star Trek movie wouldn't be appropriate for a Star Trek message board avatar, would that scene be appropriate for the movie itself?

Of course, I'm assuming that the membership of these forums is solely among the "PG-13" age bracket.

Nothing in any Star Trek movie is beyond PG-13. Most of it is G or PG at this point. I think you're a little preoccupied with thinking specific scenes might be rated higher than they actually are. And for that matter, you should pretty much be able to discuss or make graphics for anything as long as it isn't utterly pornographic. As long as it isn't nudity, most R rated films aren't even going to be a problem with graphics. Kirk and Gaila in their underwear are safely PG-13 and not even badly so. Titanic was PG-13, if you'll remember (and as a 10-year-old girl at the time, I didn't know a single other 10 year old who hadn't seen it several times in the theater--that was the most ignored PG-13 ever put on a movie).

13 is a little less strict than you seem to think. And I won't even get into what the average 13 year old is comfortable watching and what they understand. Most kids watch PG-13 and R rated movies long before they're supposed to. ;) Sleepovers with 8 year olds usually ended up with watching horror films like Stephen King's It. LOL. When it comes to kids trying to prove who is the least scared, the more nightmarish, the better. I can't tell you how many times I pulled out Night of the Living Dead on my friends. It's the same with young kids hitting puberty and being intrigued by adultness. I vividly remember that "tween" period. It's about the period where kids start branching out into more than just kiddie movies.

When discussing things, I think you'll find that the things you've objected to are not outside of what can be discussed on most PG-13 boards. Also, you have to be 13 or above to even legally sign-up on most messageboards. 90%+ of everyone here is probably an adult.

My only problem with Star Trek Enterprise was that Hoshi never really got naked enough.

American children don't see enough bare breasts. They're culturally deprived.

Guaranteed to happen; check back November 17. ;)

Orion girls' reputation as "slaves" is somewhat of a misnomer. They chose whom they want to "belong" to and then use the guy thoroughly.

I am not the least bit worried about Gaila being "used" by J.T. On the contrary, he'd better watch his backtrail, if she was on the Enterprise.

Exactly.

That whole reversal was one of several delightful contributions that Enterprise made to canon - everything about Andorians, especially Shran, being the best such elaboration.

Lamest, discounting the Temporal Cold War, was probably Arin Soong...at least, parts of his story.

I'm not so concerned for Gaila as for Kirk. For all we know, Gaila's Orion spider sense could have told her Kirk was destined to be Mr. Galactic Hero and her telling him she loved him was a simple ruse to hitch her wagon to his star (trek). I just like the original, arguably pre-TWoK iteration of Kirk's character better.

:techman:

Hey Dennis, remember when I said I didn't like you? Well, it seems that was an accounting error and the persons responsible have been sacked.

The Kirk - Gaila scene was highly uncool and disappointing.

I mean, there was no bare green boob or ass in sight.
Illogical :vulcan:

:p

I remember being very uncomfortable with the bathtub scene in Insurrection and the violation scene in Nemesis as i had my son with me and he was young at that time.

As a parent with a child with you it makes you see scenes like these in a completely different light.

It would seem a tame bathtub scene like that in Insurrection...

... would be easy to explain to a kid since it is just two people in a bathtub: "Well, Timmy, adults like taking baths too." Don't kids take baths together all the time? I don't think that Troi and Riker even kiss in that scene.

As for the violation scene in Nemesis, hey, you took your kid to a PG-13 movie, and apparently all the impaling is okay for your kid to see.

Thank you for that, but hang around - sooner or later I'll post something that's beyond the pale.

Again.

Hey all I'm saying is he's a user. It had to start somewhere. That he's channeling it for good instead of evil is commendable (I guess). ;) The stakes, well thats something different. Is there a good way to cheat? And what was his purpose in TWOK? "I dont like to lose."
Kirk is a douche. That the targets of his douchebaggery tends to be pompous bureaucrats (Barris, Ferris and Fox) takes the edge off, but when its a qualified Captain (Will Decker) and even his friends are calling him on it, well its harder to justify.

Wait, what was that about Ol' Yeller?????:wtf: :(

It doesn't reflect badly on Kirk; Orions are no secret, and it's all above board and an even playing field.

I also already assumed she had him pegged for future greatness; it would be a mutual agreement. I can't picture Gaila being upset at Kirk for reprogramming the test; she probably had a good laugh.

So why not have her in on it, all I'm sayin'.

Anyway, who cares? She's dead.

No, Kirk can be an asshole when he's locked into obsessive mode, as we saw with Decker. Not quite the same as douche.

And the Ol' Yeller/Michael Vick thing means simply this: in the end, a dead dog is a dead dog, one could argue, and a used girl is a used girl. I'm simply saying that the circumstances surrounding the killing and/or using makes all the difference.

Again.

Oh, no doubt. But I'm gonna enjoy the Era of Good Feelings while it lasts.

Oh, Kirk probably knew that he'd be in some kind of trouble for doing this - he didn't really try to hide it - and if he'd involved her in knowing cooperation she'd have been in trouble too. He's protecting his peeps...sorta.

I'll go with that. I kinda like that.
